How to break the habit of eating and drinking

Recommended Posts

I'd say for a good number of people here, myself included, it's one of the hardest issues we deal with. I'm allowed to drink right up to my first bite. I'm fortunate (?) enough that I feel a horrid pain if I drink too soon after eating. Don't care for the pain, so it is enough of a motivator.

I also find that when I'm finished eating, I get up, start cleaning up and doing the dishes and by the time I'm finished there, I'm good to go.

Also, make certain your meals have a lot of moisture in them- you're less likely to want to drink then.

Good luck.

It was hard, but you'll get into the swing of things. The discomfort was the reminder that I needed. It will work out for you...good luck!

Yea...never followed that stupid rule. It's designed to make sure you don't wash the food through your stomach too quickly and end up eating too much. I decided from the start I wasn't spending the rest of my life with a dry mouth and I literally have not once since surgery had food without something to drink. I've been at goal for 18 months and I hit goal in 18 months, so it's not a requirement for weight loss or a medical necessity as long as you are completely conscious of not eating too much. Right after surgery you will get sick if you eat too much while drinking, but down the road, you need to pay attention to it because you can easily munch your way through way more food if you're drinking at the same time.

Past that...no dry mouth for me, lol.

I avoid the Water when eating. Sometimes I forget and it is really evident because I eat a little too much. Leave the water somewhere else, tea, or whatever. It does make a difference.

Wow I didn't know it could cause weight gain down the road, thanks for that info.

I'm struggling with this too. Once or twice I've drank my meals and had no room for nutrients. One time I ate and drank and got sick.

I have to break this bad habit and I think it'll be the hard way for me.

My doc said taking a small sip to wet your mouth is ok. Put Water in a shot glass when you eat and dont consume more than that.

This is such a great idea!!

It seems counterintuitive.......but it really is easy.....at least it normally is for me.

Now.....I bend the rule bigtime on the front end....only stopping the sipping 10 mins before eating......but I always give it 30 mins after eating before resuming.

The only time it has been an issue is if I eat something really spicy-hot.

I really....really don't like the full feeling.....and as @@LipstickLady said.....I hate vomitting.

The 30 min rule was something I had concerns about when I was pre-op....but it's a non-issue for me now.

Suggestion- if you eat hot/spicy and your mouth is on fire, save a little teaspoon worth of room to eat a dollop of sour cream. Milk products relieve the heat- Water as I'm sure you know, doesn't.

My .22 cents worth

I was just recently made aware of this.

Last week a buddy at work calls me and says he has something for me.

We hook up and he hands me a ziplock bag full of habaneros.....chocolate habaneros. They are a special strain that a friend of his grows.

I show them to another hombre I work with and he gets all googly-eyed and antsy....wanting to try them. I hand them over....he pops one in his mouth and pulls out the stem and starts chewing....slowly.

I'm sorta in awe.

Dude finishes it off and says...."Not bad. The heat built for a minute then leveled off. Nowhere near the heat of the Carolina Reaper I had this morning......I had to have a glass of milk after that one".

He went on to explain the relief that dairy products can offer.....and to NOT drink Water in that situation as it just spreads the burn around.

I handed the bag of chocolate habaneros over to him and shook his hand. I like hot....but I like it to add flavor. They can have their insanely hot stuff. Jalapeños and habaneros are my comfort zone.

I have to carry a Water bottle to measure how much I am drinking in a day. I "forget" my water bottle wherever I make my meal and go to get it after I am finished eating. At work, I leave at my desk and at home, inside the fridge until the meal is over.

My doc says that 1 oz of Water maximum in a meal is OK. That's about a shot glass, so the advice earlier was pretty spot on. If I drink too soon, I get sick, and if I drink more than the odd sip of Water, I get sick as well. I'm eating a lot of softer food, though, so I don't need as much water to moisten my food.< /p>

Not sure if this helps anyone, but a positive hat has come out of the restriction on water:

I am a night eater, and I'm still struggling with the desire to eat at night. Using the restrictions about fluids to keep myself on plan. Feel like snacking? Have some mint or fruit tea and think about it. Oh, look, bed time soon and I have half an hr to wait... so far, it's working.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
