Eating too fast.. Aaarrgh!

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am 8 weeks post op now and STILL having trouble eating slow! I am a busy mom of 5 and I just don't have the patience required to stretch a meal over 30 minutes. So, many times, I eat too fast and then get sick.

Anyone else struggling with this? Any practical tips?

I use baby utensils, but still too fast...

make it a great day

When I was teaching myself to eat slowly, I used the Eat Slower app. I set my intervals for 45 seconds between bites. It worked really well for me. Measure out a small portion for your meal -- eating too much can cause distress just as easily as eating too fast, and the two are related. So, if you aren't being very careful to measure/weigh out a very small portion of food to start with, that can also be tied to your problems with getting sick. Good luck!

Nine months out from VSG, I still eat too fast. Lately, I've been focusing on chewing my food much more because this naturally slows me down.

Almost 5 months out and I still get sick from eating too fast. BUT. when I do eat slow I feel great. So don't quit trying to re-learn this bad behaviour.

I like what I'm hearing. I'm not doomed to struggle with this forever. It's ok that it's taking time...

I purchased really nice flatware and plates before surgery and since I live alone they would go unused if I used baby utensils. I have always used regular utensils and plates.

I used to eat fast pre-op and I tried myself to not eat fast post-op by taking a bite, putting the for down, set a timer on my phone for 90 seconds, take a bite.

I also eat while I read on my phone or computer and that causes me to naturally pause some to scroll, etc.

I used baby spoons. I would eat a bite, clean a counter. Eat a bite, walk to the family room. Eat a bite, wash a pan. Eat a bite, done.

This is a great idea. When i do it that way, i feel great!

I too suffer from the same bad habits of eating way too fast. My nutritionalists suggesting using my left hand, as I am right handed, and I will try this tonight.

I tried to visualize myself doing that and I dumped the food in my lap before I got it to my mouth!

When I have patients that are brushing their teeth too hard and eroding their gums and enamel, I make the same suggestion- switch to your non dominant hand. Makes perfect sense to me.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
