Did you ever have second thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on August 15th, The last couple of days before my surgery, I was really having some doubts. Got really nervous. My main goal was to get better control over my diabetes and the pre-op diet did that for me. So I had just about talked myself into just skipping surgery and low carbing it forever. Then I thought about all of the effort I had put into getting approved and ready for surgery. I thought about how my doctors and my insurance company thought that this is something that would benefit my health and potentially prolong my life. I realized that I may not get another opportunity like this- so I went through with it,

I can tell you without a doubt, that having the surgery was definitely the best decision for me. I am not even quite 2 weeks post op and I am already thrilled with my results. I weigh 25 lbs less than I did 1 month ago (lost 10 lb pre-op & rest after surgery), I don't take any diabetes medication any more (I used to take 5 shots of insulin per day & oral medication). I found recovery to be much easier than I expected. My pain was never more than a 4 out of 10.I feel like I have a new lease on life. I am so happy that I didn't talk myself out of the surgery.

This made me feel so much better! thank you!

What time are you schedule for. I'm glad mine is at 730 so I'm at hospital at 5am that way I'm in and set

I am scheduled for 7:45AM so we are in at the same time! I am also in at 5AM and first of the day. I'm so grateful for that so I don't have a lot of time to think about it.

Whereabouts do you live?

I'm having major butterflies in my stomach feeling. I get sleeved on the 13th. I'm starting my preop diet on the 1st. I am so nervous about that. I think that diet is gonna be the hardest part.

I was just sleeved Monday, 8.22. I was a nervous wreck the last couple weeks. The first three days post op I was sick with the decision I made, but now just a couple days later I'm feeling better every day and I'm just excited to watch the scale change.

Happy Friday!

First off, I just want to say that I am not reconsidering my decision to get surgery. It's happening! But I think that might be my problem.

I am starting my pre op diet this Monday and being sleeved on 9/14. I have gone through so much to get to this point and I thought that I had never been so sure of anything in my life. All of a sudden the last few days, as the day gets closer I am second guessing myself. Am I sure this is right? What if something goes wrong? What if I regret it? If I am in pain will I hate myself for it? Could I really not lose this weight without surgery? It strange because I KNOW the answer to all of these questions, and I KNOW that the surgery is what I need and that a year from now I will do nothing but thank myself. BUT for some reason, I have been questioning myself the past few days.

I am summing this up to my fear and my anxiety about the surgery talking to me and that it's comparable to cold feet before a wedding. I have never been hospitalized before and the closest thing to surgery I had was my wisdom teeth removed.

But at the SAME TIME I am SO EXCITED for this surgery. I am so excited to feel better and look better and move more and not be so self conscious about myself.

Did anyone else go through these emotions? How did you get your mind at ease? I think that I am going crazy!

WOW. Surgery date for me is 9/2... One week to go. And this post is everything that is running through my mind right now. EVERYTHING. Knowing that I'm not the only one who's thinking it is reassuring!!! Like you, I'm doing it, no matter what. No turning back. But that doesn't change what is going through my mind!!! I feel for your insecurities but I am so grateful that you've expressed them!!! You're not alone!! Luck!!

Thank you for making me feel like I am not the only one losing it! Idk if it will help you, but yesterday after I posted this, I sat down and wrote a letter to my post op self and I listed all of the reasons I came to this decision, and listed all of the things I want to do that I feel I can't or won't because of my weight (go on a roller coaster, buy a bra at Victoria's Secret, fit into a shirt I loved at White House Black Market, run a mile). It made me feel a lot more at ease and reassured and even brought some excitement. We will be okay! Lots of Luck this week!

@,

In answer to your first question, nope, I never had second thoughts! I knew I needed to do something if I didn’t want to struggle with food and weight for the rest of my life. But I got the lap-band, which is different than the sleeve.

If you already know the answer to the questions you asked, then you already know the answer – weight loss surgery is for you! And it is totally normal to be nervous. Why wouldn’t you be? It’s a permanent change to your body, it’s a permanent change to your lifestyle, it involves surgery and risk. But if you’ve already weighed out the pros and cons and you know the answer – then you know!

But if you’re still unsure, then keep thinking. Until you get into that operating room, it’s never too late to back out, or to sign up again for surgery. Take all the time you need to go over each of your doubts – how risky is it, can you really follow the rules, is there anything else you can and should do to lose the weight without surgery?

Your feelings are totally normal. And if you’ve already decided for sure to get surgery, just focus on what you can do to make it go as well as possible – for example, starting a walking program now, and reading up on all the post-op diet rules.

Good luck!

I had my surgery on 3/25. It was rough the first few weeks, head hunger is the worst and I didn't realize how much of a psychological journey this is. Anyway, 5 months gone and 65 lbs down, I don't regret a thing! Hang in there, you are correct to have doubts but rest assured, you are giving yourself the gift of life!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Made the decision to have the sleeve and as it gets closer I am getting scared and worried. Scared about possible complications and worried more about family dinners ( though my family is supportive) and eating with people around. I have one " friend" who is very unsupportive and against the surgery and I think that's what's starting all this doubting.

Never gave it a second thought..wasn't nervous at all...once I decided to do it...that was it...I was at peace with my decision...I will admit the first few months post op were challenging and I had my moments of regrets but that soon faded and so far I'm happy with my decision ...6 months post op gastric bypass down 68 lbs since surgery and 98 lbs since the start of the process [emoji3][emoji106]

I was more afraid of the worsening health complications than the surgery. I was afraid my husband would die from diabetes complications. He is extremely glad that I pushed us through the surgery process without fear, because it helped him cope. The alternative was awful. Seriously, we started living after the sleeve. We are having an amazing happy life.

All of these comments have helped me so much. I have surgery in 4 days and the doubts started to creep in last night. I am currently sitting at the hospital waiting for preop and the butterflies are everywhere in my stomach.... Ugghh! I check in at noon on tuesday. Why do they do that to us?? I wish i was in first thing in morning.

Dinks97420, let's stay in touch, I'm Tuesday also! Nervous but looking forward to it too .... Terrified of the possible nausea and pain after. Hopefully it won't be there or pass quickly!

Sounds good. I am more nervous about having major gastric issues like diarrhea and stuff like that long term that will limit what I can do. I have a pretty good pain threshold so not too worried about that!!

@

I had 2nd thoughts right before my surgery. Fortunately I was in a position where it was too late to back out (already at the hospital in Mexico with the nurses putting compression socks on me). I thought I was crazy for having the surgery and going to Mexico for it.

At 3 weeks post-op, I can already tell you how happy I am that I went through with the surgery. My intense gotta-have-it-right-now cravings are gone. I'm not spending $30 a day on take-out. I've already lost 2" from my waist and my face is noticeably thinner and less puffy.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
