Stuck with weight loss lapband

Recommended Posts

I am so frustrated. Over the last few weeks I'm stuck. I've been bouncing between a couple of pounds and am not losing. I'm eating around or under 800 calories. I'm excercising daily burning 500-1000 calories a day. Biking, swimming, tennis drills. Usually I do 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day of sweating activity. The least is one hour a day burning 700 calories. No salt is added to my diet. I'm getting my Protein Or exceeding. I'm drinking lots of Water. I've got a high school reunion in 7 weeks. My band is working I can't eat much. What can I do?

If you're truly eating 800 calories a day and then burning 1000 calories during exercise, you're doing your metabolism a HUGE disservice...

Look, your body NEEDS food to survive. Your brain alone uses 25% of your energy consumption. Digestion and respiration use a good deal of energy as well. In order for your body to operate, you need a minimum calorie allowance of usually 1200 calories. MINIMUM.

If you drop below that minimum, your body WILL panic. A panicking body slows the systems down so they require less fuel. You do this long enough and your body will start to think it doesn't need as many calories after all and your metabolism TANKS.

This isn't good. It's starvation, and your body is fighting to survive.

If your NUT approves of this sort of extremism, you need to find a new doctor.

Try increasing the amount of food you eat and cut back on the exercise, slowly, over time. In a few weeks when you get to a sane eating and exercise pattern you should see the weight come off. Do it soon before you do any serious damage to your body. Your lap band should NOT be a tool to make you drop weight in 7 weeks for a stupid reunion. What you're doing is irresponsible and unhealthy.

Thank you for your kind words. I was eating 1200 calories until recently. I'm taking 11 pro bono capsules a day for bone growth. It's impossible for me to get my food in with those. They fill me up. I've been getting my Protein in everyday. I make sure of that. Tennis is new for the last couple of weeks as I need an impact excercise for bone growth. I can cut down the biking which I did before. Swimming helps me relax. I'm trying to add more calories and have 2 Protein Shakes a day, trying to get at least 1000 calories in a day. I've been losing 4 lbs a month on a regular basis. I've been stuck with weight loss for the last few weeks.

Try adding avocados or Peanut Butter to your shakes. The healthy fats and Protein will help.

I apologize for being cross but your original post sounded ridiculous without any background. Too often I see folks on these forums wanting to drop weight as fast as possible even if their methods are self-destructive.

In any case, stalls do happen. My strategy is to eat more for a couple days, then eat less for a couple days, and oscillate the pattern until the weight comes off. Unfortunately, our bodies do not want to lose weight. We need to trick our primitive brain into thinking there's enough to eat so it doesn't alter metabolism into starvation mode.

I added butter and cream to my cauliflower purée last night so my calories were actually higher and I dropped a little. I bought avocados which I love with lemon. I pulled my back this morning so my activity is going to slow down. I really enjoy playing tennis. Coming back from 20 years not playing. My husband plays too so I think once I'm able to play games with others that will be perfect for activity since I enjoy it. I also love to bike but it isn't helping my bone growth. I've got osteopenia if my lower spine. I broke my knee 4 years ago so I've been doing low impact excercise and need impact for bond growth. Tennis is good because upper body excercise is good. Walked for 30 minutes yesterday. My knee started to hurt. So adding cream. Butter. Avocados to diet. Avocados are so delicious and good for you and easy to eat. I made meatballs yesterday and could only eat one for dinner. Very very slowly too. I missed my 20 year reunion because I was 9 months pregnant. I really want to go to my 40th and see an old very good friend. I just need to drop a little to fit in a smaller size to feel more comfortable to attend.

I add dry Peanut Butter to my shakes. I've been stuck between 227-230. Today I'm down to 226.5. I think once I crack that 225 mark which I have not been below forever I can continue losing My band is 9cc out of 10 which is good for me. Sometimes I can eat more who knows. It's these huge capsules I can't stand but they are necessary.

Have you considered what foods you are choosing? Try doing what KristinLe is recommending she is not wrong. I think you're body is holding onto calories. Consult a nutritionist if you can.

I take the tone of emails carefully as I was just asking for advice. Good news though. I did a 2 day Dr Oz cleanse as it is called. While adding Protein Powder to the shakes to get my Protein inand it appears that I'm dropping and may break this plateau. 2nd day out to dinner for my sons birthday so really did it for 1 1/2 days.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
