Slower weight loss second time around?

Recommended Posts

So when I got my band I lost 100lbs in the first six months. By 9 months I had lost 127lbs and hit my goal weight. In total I went from 325lbs down to 198.

Even though I had horrible heartburn and reflux I kept most of the weight off staying around 225lbs for about 6 years. I had my Fluid taken out to relieve the heartburn and acid reflux and immediately gained weight. I ended up at 299.8lbs the day after my revision surgery from band to sleeve.

I lost weight pretty quick after my revision surgery and dropped back down to about 275. That was on June 7th. I'm about 5-6 weeks out and I've lost lost another few pounds. Today I was 171.8lbs.

I can't figure out what's different this time. Is it because my metabolism is slower now? I read recently about how contestants on the biggest loser had slower metabolisms after they lost all of their weight. This makes me think that losing weight and then gaining back really slowed my metabolism down.

I know when I got my band I eliminated about 95% of bread, rice, and Pasta from my diet and wonder if this could be what's hurting me.

My recovery has been a little slower this time because I've had some drainage from my old port site so I haven't been quite as active as quickly as I was the first time with my band.

So, anyone else have slower weight loss with their sleeve than with their band after revision? Any thoughts or ideas on what I should do or should I just be more patient? I would love to hear some insights. Thanks!

I'm a little confused - did you lose 100lbs and that wasn't a typo or did you lose 4 and it was a typo?

I'm a revision too, and I weighed 255 on surgery - currently at 244 and I'm 4 weeks out... its been slow but its coming off.

As an ex bander i am finding weight loss is slower this time around.

The reason i did my sleeve is because i officially screwed up my metabolism... so i can't go on higher calories for life without gaining.

After major weight loss your body gets "used" to the dropping of major weight.. so the 2nd time around it becomes harder because the shock factor isn't there.

Unfortunately as ex banders and as people who have lost large amounts of weight... it will be slower this time around for both of us.

I have steadily lost weight, but i haven't lost big numbers each week.. even in the week post op... it has been slow and steady.

Y'know, folks, a slower rate of weight loss may be a letdown, but thinking about it is known in the trade as 'maladaptive cognition.' In real-life terms, it means thinking things that aren't good to think. Lost weight is lost weight. Would you even be losing at the slower rate without the revision to sleeve?

I'm not one of you and don't know if I will be. Having lost 115 in 15 (?) months at the start, I then regained about 65-70, letting an event derail me, not because of band failure. I'm finally seeing the NP on Monday (last time was about two years ago), positive that I have dilation, but won't know until the esophagram about erosion. In short, I'm thinking revision is what I'll need. I have yet to find out if my medical plan will cover it. I'd go for sleeve and would have to get past my own biases against it. With luck, at least some of he biases are based on ignorance of the procedure.

Anyway, I really stopped in primarily to say that lost weight is lost weight.

Absolutely, as long as i am losing i am happy... frustrated at the slowness... add a metobolic issue, and it gets doubly frustrating especially after hard work and doing the right thing... but its all good...

You're right. If I hadn't had surgery I'd still be 300lbs and gaining with no end in sight. With my band I lost so quickly the first time that I guess I'm a little worried that I won't be able to have the same loss that I did before. While I'm glad to not be 300lbs, I'd rather keep losing and not stay at 270lbs or thereabouts.

There, now, of course I'm right. You've seen the light. The mortarboard isn't going to waste. Keep doing what you're doing and you'll have a boyish figure before you know it. You're good.

Good job on the weight loss. I will be having the revision on 7/26/16 because my band slipped but did loose 88lbs in 1 year. I will post my new journey with my sleeve. And I do agree lost weight is lost weight. Stay on track and you will get to your goal. Focus good luck.

I'm 3 months post op revision and the scale hasn't moved in the last 4 weeks. I've only lost 28 lbs. it's very frustrating.

I too am loosing at a slower rate than before.

I had VBG 20 yrs ago and lost 230 lbs.

Over the years I have gained back 130 and lost 200 several times. I am sure this has been a shock.

But, even though my current loss with RNY is slower than before, I still see the scale moving, and weeks where it moves slow my cloths fit much looser and my health is so much better.

We have to measure the whole package, and not just the scale, and never let that little dial discourage us.

The more I read other band experiences, the more I know my experience was not typical. It took me a year to lose 25 lbs and my surgeon yelled at me that I was screwing up his metrics and wasn't trying. I never went back and regained almost all of my pre-op and post-op weight.

I hope the sleeve works better for me.

I have been losing 2 lbs a week since my revision in May, Very frustrating to see the fast numbers on first time sleevers. I guess a pound lost is better than a pound gained. Just hope I can lose 60 more lbs.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
