To my newly bypassed friends: I'm just over a week out, and I think I am feeling hungry :/ I didn't cheat at all on the liquids the first week, but since I've been allowed to add cottage cheese and yogurt I've been eating a little more than recommended. They say I should be sticking to a tablespoon max at a time, but I can easily eat 1/4 cup already. I know I'm not supposed to push it, but I'm terribly tempted to eat more and taboo foods. I'm starting to wonder if they really did the surgery at all, haha. I thought I wouldn't be hungry during this time, but I really thought I wouldn't be able to eat much. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Maybe this is all head hunger, but I don't really know how to tell. I want to eat, I seem to be able to eat. I guess I'm just wondering why I did all this in the first place...

I haven't had the exact same experience. However, when I was moved to stage 2 I tried split pea Soup and was able to eat 1 ounce more than suggested. I'm supposed to get up to 4 oz by the end of stage 2, so I'm not getting anxious. The KEY is to eat slowly and give yourself time to signal that you're hungry. At first I "felt" hunger, but it really was in my head. All the commercials and smells bought back memories Lol but I quickly got that brain together. The BRAIN and the way we conceptualize food is a MAJOR component of our success or failure. Be careful and take note of your mental thoughts.

Well day 1 has been great almost. Lol the pain meds are making no me itch like MAD!!!! and the cath is driving me nuts. Otherwise, I am great. Ice cubes and Water are going down without any problems. I have not experienced being hungry either. They are giving me gas meds, so no problem there either. When I first got to my room I was in extreme pain, but that ended quickly with the meds. Just wanted to send y'all an update.

Stick with recommended portion sizes. Your stomach nerves were severed and have not healed yet so you will not get the normal signals of being full. You also don't want to eat until full - just satisfied. The foods you are eating tend to slide through your sleeve fast - therefore you're able to eat more without feeling restriction. A 1/4 cup is 2ozs which is what I'm allowed at one week post-op. If you think you're hungry - try drinking something instead and see if it helps. There's a lot of good resources for learning to deal with head hunger. Stay strong!

Surgery update: Okay, new update. It has been a very hard few days. I was tricked at first. Within a couple of hours of surgery, I was feeling great. However, that quickly changed. Through the entire first night I feel like satan had unleashed a gang of demons inside my body. I was allergic to the pain meds that they were pushing and it was very difficult dealing with that. I was up throwing up blood for hours. The pain from that was terrible and I was very scared. I still have tons of the blood in my sinuses. The surgery day and night and the first part of the next day I was so mad at myself for doing this. However, it is getting better everyday. I am at home now so that is a good thing. I have not had more than 2 hours of sleep at a time since surgery. More positive notes: I am feeling better, I am able to hold down Water, small sips of a Protein Drink and about a 1/4 cup of strained cream Soup (not at the same time). I believe I am on the mend now.

@@Pink Ninja I'm 10 months and 11 days post op. I've lost 163 pounds since surgery and 218 pounds since I started this journey. My weight loss has slowed wayyyyyyy down, mostly because I've been laid up recovering from knee surgery for two months, so that's a bit of a bummer. However, even though I'm still 224 pounds and about 50 pounds away from my goal, I'm happy to be here. My life has changed drastically in the last year and a half, and I have changed drastically as well. I used to wear a 4x top and size 32 jeans (which were sometimes snug!) and now I wear a large or 1x top and size 18 jeans. By all accounts, I'm still "fat". But I feel amazing, I look VERY different, and many things in my life have improved. I'm going back to school to finish my degree in August, and I don't fear walking up to the building from the parking lot or climbing two flights of stairs anymore. I just got a tattoo to Celebrate all of my effort and change. I'm excited to see wonderful things happening for you too! And everyone on this forum!

Wow God bless you!! That allergic reaction caused a lot of trouble. I'm glad you're doing well now.

August sure is a loooong month. So many of you have had your surgery and moving towards eating again. I, on the other hand, start my one-week pre-op liquid diet tomorrow. Have had my final pre-op appointment and gotten my meds. Surgery is the 29th.

Did any of you have to give yourself Enoxaparin injections? The doc just sort of glossed over this - I'm hoping the hospital nurses will show me how?

Is that the blood thinner? If so, yes I did. It lasted a week and was truly painless. I barely felt the needle. You'll be fine.

Had my band to bypass surgery on 8/24. Took longer than they expected band began eroding into my liver. Stayed an extra night in the hospital still in a lot of pain. Mostly my incisions and killer back pain? Anyone else experience this? Any advice?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
