Recommended Posts

Hello i was banded on 8/17/07 with the new AP band and have lost 18 pounds I know becasue of the liquids, I am hungry now. What is the difference between the old band and the new band? Mushies are not cutting it:help: :help:

Maybe I should have had the old band put in?

Hi Contraband:

You probably have the AP Band? My people told me that this new AP band is larger than the old band and therefore you can eat more, so you should be more responsible and continue to watch your food intake until your first fill. So your friends are giving you the right information. Hang in there. 20 lbs is great. I can't wait to hit that.

Take care,

Nilsa

Hi Nilsa,

How do you do the ticker? I can get to the website but I can't figure out how to get it onto my page. Come to think of it, I can't put anything permanently onto my page.

Thanks,

Ellen

I dont think that the type of band has anything to do with your feeling hungry right now. A lot of doctors put the band in empty, so you wont feel restriction until you get a fill. And from what I understand you will still get hungry until the right fill in your band. I am still learning about all of this myself and know that everyone is different and it takes time to get to know your band.

Hey all,

Has anyone had a fill yet?? I get mine tomorrow, I am a bit nervouse, just because of the unknown... I broke my little platau I was on so now I am down 16lbs... I can't tell you how much energy I have, I actually played outside with my kids yesterday. I can't tell you the last time that happened. Just wanted to tell everyone they are doing a great job!! It is nice that we have other people that we can talk to who are going through the same things, at the same times!! I will let you know how the fill goes. Just one last question, where is everyone's port, I have heard some have it in different places, mine is in my belly button..

Hi Everyone,

My name is Ellen and I live in Philadelphia. I had my band placed on 8/3/07. I weighed 274 the day before my surgery and as of today I am at 253. Two of my wounds are infected and my Dr. started me on Cipro (an antibiotic) today. Besides my painful wounds, I feel great. I haven't really started exercising yet because my knees hurt too much.

I am pretty much eating smaller portions of all the foods I usually eat minus the ice cream andor cake that I usually would eat at nightime. I'm a little worried because i'm not really feeling full quick enough and I feel like I have no restriction. I really lost the 20 pounds in the first 2 1/2 weeks and have only lost 1 pound since.

Everyone is telling me that this is normal before my first fill. Anyone having this kind of experience.

Glad everyone is doing well.

Ellen

wow its interesting we have somthings in common... i hear its normal. you dont always have enough restriction (or any?) before fills.

I live right outside of philly, got banded 8-6 in Mexico and got my first fill this monday the 17th. i was hungrey alot during liqueds and mushies, and could eat alot more than i thought i would be able to, when i started solids. the most i'v ever weighed is 253lbs... i lost 15 lbs in the first two weeks and then hit a platue and yoyoed in a 4 lb range.hopeully things will pick up now that i got a fill.

its graet that you cut out cake and ice cream-more than i can say for myself. i cheat sometimes, well, once or twice not to much though, i'm always hard on myself.i was wondering if you knew of any suport groups in this area, i could really use one.

hope the wonds are better, keep up the good job

Hi Hana,

I would love to start a group or a meeting for phila. area bandsters. I know I could use the support. I got my first fill (5cc in a 10cc band) 2 weeks ago. A couple days after my fill I felt like I could still eat a lot more than I think I should be able to. I lost 1 more pound, a total of 22#, before my first fill. I haven't weighed myself since my first fill and it's been a little less than 2 weeks. I suppose I should be happy the scale is going down instead of up but I would like it to move a bit faster. I also have not been exercising, so I shouldn't complain. I need to remember this is not magic, it's just a tool. But if I could decrease my intake by myself I wouldn't need a band. I will talk to my doctor.

Enough about me, how are you doing and would you be interested in a support group of some kind?

Wow!! 5cc's!! Your doctor is aggressive.

I have the APS band but won't be getting a fill until the end of October because they want me to wait until I get back from vacation. (a week in mid-October)

I was banded on 8/27 - 1 more week of mushies to go! *phew*

Glad to hear everyone is doing so well.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
