Hair Loss :( What to do

Recommended Posts

My hair is really thinning out. It comes out in the shower, brushing my hair or just seeing the odd strand on me. It was already thin to begin with. Now I see my scalp very well, and it feels like I have no hair left.

Besides the usual remedies of Protein, Vitamins, and all that, and thing else I can do?

Shampoos, or anything that helps hair to grow and thicken?

My hair is medium in length.

Some one told me to try Rogaine for women during this stage until your hair starts to re-grow. I'm worried about the same thing. Super fine hair already...

I am almost 7 months post op and suffering significant hairloss. My hair was already thin before surgery. I am 6 weeks into starting Rogaine for women.

In the last week I've started to think maybe my hair looks a little thicker but nothing significant yet. Apparently it can be 3 months before you see results though.

I will update this post if and when I notice any hairs growing.

Rogaine does not help with this type of hair loss...save your $.

I had hairloss before this surgery which is why I am using it. It was only $30 for a 3 month supply so I will give a a whirl and see what happens.

My doctor suggested starting Rogaine right away while going through the approval process to help prevent hair loss. I've been using it for a little over 2 months, and my surgery is scheduled for June 28th. I'm hoping it works, as I can't afford to have thinner hair than I already do! So far I don't notice any change, but like stated above, it does sometimes take 3 months to start working.

Cut it shorter and get sulfate free shampoo... Neither will help it grow but will make what you have look very healthy.

Maybe get a keratin treatment to help it look more healthy.

My hair dresser had weight loss surgery, she said its just going to happen but she has the plan for my hair ready.

I'm about 6 months out and have been really losing it quickly lately! [emoji30][emoji30]. I don't think anyone but my hairdresser and I can tell yet, so I'm hoping it stops soon! I lost a bunch after my hysterectomy last summer, and that is growing back. It's a few inches long, so I'm going to end up with many layers. [emoji15][emoji849]

Lots of head massage to stimulate your follicles to grow more hair- won't stop it falling out but will help it grow back quicker!

I generally read here, joined a while ago, but this is my first post. hair loss has been a bit of a big deal for me in the last several months. It started for me at month 4, and my hair got super thin. I could easily see my scalp. I'm now 8 months out. I was losing fistfuls anytime I'd wash it and brush it. We had to call a plumber out to fix what my hair had done to the pipes. That bad. My hair was down to my rear end, so that didn't help our poor pipes out in the slightest. I really thought I'd go bald. However, I went and got my hair cut shorter to try to help preserve what I have a few weeks ago, and warned the lady beforehand that I was likely to lose quite a bit when she washed/ cut my hair. Much to my surprise, hardly any came out! In the last few weeks the loss is still there, but so very much less.

If you're going to have loss, you're going to have loss. It's part of the body's reaction to the surgery. And it's ok, because it's not forever! It feels like it will be, and it can be a big area of self-consciousness, but I can tell you -- the last thing anyone noticed, if anyone ever did, about my changing body was my hair.

Best thing to do is like others have suggested: Take care of what you have, and take good care of your scalp. New hairs will be joining the party soon!

if everyone could please take turns coming by to massage my head for the next 6 months, I'd like to test this theory out. :D

I had super, super thin hair before surgery. Around month four started losing even more. Was really bad. My NUT told me about a powder collagen hydrosolate made by Great Lakes. It's the green can. Collagen is good for bones, hair and skin. I buy it on Amazon. I take two tbsp twice daily. No taste at all. Only 50 calories per serving and has 11 grams of Protein. (Not whey protein). You can add it to beverages or food. I started it about month four. Month 7 post op my hair was scary thin. Now, month eleven I have a lot of new growth. I don't think I will end up thicker, but will certainly get back what I lost. Also skin and nails are doing great. Lastly, I got light blonde highlights to camouflage the contrast of my dark him against my scalp.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
