appetite suppressants - several years post op

Recommended Posts

I have seen a couple of people write that their surgeons prescribed appetite suppressants down the road. I am 4.5 years out and my appetite is out of control at the moment. In the past I have always been able to rein it in by eating low carb, but I can't seem to do that and I don't know why. I am still hanging out at goal, but I am eating so much it is starting to worry me. I am curious to hear from any of you who have used appetite control drugs post op and if they help you get back on track.

My friend, I would be concerned about adding a weight suppressant right now. Didn't you just recently start another new med? I think I would ask if THAT med might be revving up your appetite.

It's weird how meds reactive so differently within individuals.

Until you can find out about the med and its possibilities pertaining to you new appetite, I wouldn't be adding anything new.

I'll always side on "changing the existing recipe" before "adding another ingredient".

Decisions, decisions. Why do we always have to be making them?

Prayers going up for you---and me. :)

I have used them pre op and would have no qualms about using them post op under a doctor's supervision. In my opinion, whatever tools can be thrown at us to keep this disease at bay is alright with me.

And I think McButterpants has or even is currently using them post op? Correct me if I'm wrong guys?

About 6-8 weeks ago, after indulging for a month or two a bit more in dark chocolate than I felt comfortable doing (I had ramped up from one square per evening to 6 squares per evening!) I experimented to alter my appetite for carbs by going back to using a PPI short-term instead of my usual H2 blocker antacid. I wanted to reduce my stomach acid production and, thereby, any stomach acid contribution to my appetite.

My Science Experiment Outcomes: The experiment worked. :) After a week of cold turkey on dark chocolate and a single PPI a day (Protonix), I was no longer a carbaholic.

Thereafter I went back to my two-a-day H2 blocker (Ranitadine - 150 mg.). I am now again indulging OCCASIONALLY BUT NOT NIGHTLY in dark chocolate.

food for thought ...?

Good ideas. I don't take any ppi and considering doing a 2 week course and see if that helps. I have been at this maintenance thing for awhile and I am honestly wondering if this is physical or emotional. I have been SO HAPPY lately but sometimes the emotional reasons are disguised at first.

FYI:

I was told last week by my bariatric surgeon that the program directors of my team are going to start limiting the use of PPIs due to the link of prolonged use and kidney stones.

Just something else to think about, right?

I just wanted to pass that on to you. As you know, kidney stones are nasty and extremely painful.

Wishing you nothing but the best.

Prayers going up... :)

Eating a lot for how long? I did go straight to the glee of your love life! That certainly could be emotional eating for me. Maybe track your moods/thoughts as your eating. I'm glad you posted about this. I go through hunger spurts and can usually tie it to a change in activity but also to seasons changing. Weird.

The eating bender has been about a month. Not only glee of a fun boyfriend but also no more surgical complication, no more kidney stone and relatee procedures. It was like being in jail for a few months (when I oddly did not overeat) and then being FREE.

I am very happy but have some angst as well.

I have only used ppi occasionally since the first few months post op so it doesn't scare me to try a 2 week course. Now if I could just remember where I put them...

I know that for me life's serious stresses and justifiable angst don't inspire me to overeat. But celebration, partying and being overserved certainly do. ;)

And then there's the simple power of a new *habit* -- eating and drinking in a new way over a month's time -- that can be either positive or dangerous for my weight maintenance.

Consistency in one's behavior can be leveraged for good or evil. Examples: The holiday 8, the freshman 15, the newlywed 20, the quitting smoking 30, etc.

P.s I always like your posts and comments, they have helped with this journey! I come back to this forum for insight, motivation, and suggestions especially when things get hard. The weight loss community on instagram has helped too. I have gotten recipes, learned about different products people are using and the visuals really help. On to my next phase, plastics in a couple of hours! [emoji119]????[emoji2][emoji50]

My PCP won't prescribe anything because I am not overweight. He advised I go back on wellbutrin, but my hunger 're-emerged while on it.

My pcp nor surgeon won't prescribe it either [emoji53] I get it from a clinic and more expensive for a few pills.

I have found these type meds come with many side effects that disrupt one's quality of life. For me it's usually a nonstop headache. Best to either not use or use for very short term. Think about researching some herbs that may suppress appetite but have less side effect, of course check with your team before taking them.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
