Accomplished a HUGE goal. 5k race

Recommended Posts

I do 5K's once a month as that was one of my resolutions for 2016; however I don't run! But awesome that you do that though.

Since my journey began in September 2014 I set a goal to run a 5k. I accomplished that goal yesterday. Finishing the 5k in 26 minutes. I began my journey at 222 pounds. attachicon.gifImageUploadedByBariatricPal1459691206.357433.jpgpounds.

Heck yes.....and you look incredible doing it, too. That is great !!!!

Now there is a thought......doing a 5K but not running. Okay...I'm exposing my ignorance here......didn't realize that was an option....seriously didn't realize that. You may have just perked up my interest in such events. My knees are shot and the trauma of running at my current weight wouldn't be good. Maybe after I knock down another 70+ pounds....we'll see....but walking a 5K event.....that's of interest now.

I'm gonna look further into this.

A buddy has been after me to do a Tough Mudder event with him in a local swamp. I told him, "Sure, bro.....no problem....just leave out the gators, the cold and all that running and jumping and I'll give it a go". The after party is where I think I'd really shine, though.......Everyone hoses down.....hits the showers and then goes on a pub crawl. This is the leg of the race that I think I can stand tall and turn in some good stats. :P

For anyone in Houston, we have Run for Wellness 5k's. You can go as slow or fast as you want, they are free, and they have them 3 times/month in different parts of town. Walkers Welcome!!

Yep you can walk them! Of course serious 5Kers do run, but not this girl. I do walk fast and keep to the right of traffic. Not sure where you live, but here in Houston there is a group called Houston Wellness Project where it offers free registration to participate with the 5 K. Maybe something equivalent where you live. Try Googling free 5K's. Just a thought!!

I'll certainly do so.

I'm hoping that one of the Navy SEAL recruiters will take note of my participation in said events. I'm really putting a lot of stock into them opening up a Geriatric Bariatric Division........damn.....I know I'd not last but a day or two......but it I would make it count.

Just joking folks.....not trying to raise the hackles of active or former service members. They have nothing but my full respect. But, an old dude has to have hopes and dreams, no ?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
