Major Reflux, No Restriction, & Very Little Recent Weight Loss = Stretched Pouch

Recommended Posts

Mike and all - Thank you for this thread. I wish EVERY lap band patient would read it. I know when I started having my syptoms: reflux, not loosing weight, PBing, etc, I thought I was just stressed and/or underfilled. Well guess what I WAS OVERFILLED! I lived with the symptons for over a month and finally called my doc a week and a half ago. When he looked at my band under fluero he found that I had an actue slip, probably caused from the PBing, which was caused by the overfill. Prior to my docs discovery I was able to eat with no problems, then started having severe reflux, and then couldn't keep anything down including Water, then the next day could eat fine, then the reflux returned, and then one day the sucker just tightened up like a snake and wasn't letting go no matter what!!! Although I have had my band over a year, I have to remember it is a very fickle piece of equipment and requires constant learning on my part, even when you think you know it all! Anyway, just to reiterate...if you have reflux...and haven't eaten spicy food...call the doctor immediately so you won't have a slip like me. Just an FYI so you are not concerned about my band...I was told to stay on liquids for three weeks and will then be looked at again under fluero. The doc beleives the slip is "small" and will "repair itself" with the unfill. I will let you know what the doc says when I go in on 9/11.

I am still defilled, running on empty, because I am still kind of reflux-y. I sure do miss my band although I don't have anything like the appetite I used to have and I do continue to eat carefully. I know that I will miss my band even more now that I am in the process of quitting smoking. It was being an oral grrl which got me into difficulties with my weight and now my other favourite oral activity is gone, too. Oh, ugh! :phanvan

I sure am chewing a lot of gum. I don't like chewing gum. It's a lousy substitute for a good meal and a smoke. I sure do miss my band.... It's gonna have to be willpower for Green at the present. :tired

Haven't heard from Mike in awhile. Mike, tell us how you're doing?? :bounce:

StephM: Great information. I am sorry you and Green have been having those problems and are having to go through a healing process. I do hope that all is well when you're finished with the liquid diet.

Green you're sounding better. I know how much you're missing smoking. I still have one or two occasionally. It's a bad, nasty, tough to beat habit. And it sure wreaks havoc on a hiatal hernia! You're smart to give up those stinky ole fags.

This is the 4th day of my non-smoking regime. :tired Man, do I miss smoking! :omg: Man, do I miss a filled band! :phanvan And I don't feel as calm or as intelligent as I used to, either. :) I still have that creepy little reflux cough. :rain:

green: The cough is the last thing to go. Hang in there. You'll start feeling so much better, you're gonna want to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Hello all. Just thought I'd check in. I'm doing great. Just 23 lbs from goal. I don't recognize myself in pictures anymore. :-)

If anything, I probably need a fill. I think I've lost a lot of internal fat as well. I'm trying to wait to go back to see Drs. Ortiz and Martinez until I'm at goal. Then I'll get myself a maintenance fill and start learning a new normal.

I was banded 8/07. Things were not progressing until my 4 th fill in December - now losing weight consistently, down 37 pounds. BUT...this week some thing has changed. I can drink liquids (all be it slowly), but I am not able to hold the usual volume of solids that I was able to only 2 weeks ago. I am running to make myself vomit almost evey meal and usually more than once. I guess I'll go to Soups only for a few days and see what happens. I love the fact that I'm losing weight so well now, but should I get my band opened?

Hi! It sounds like your band is too tight. The same thing had happened to me and I went back to the doctor and he took some fluids out and I starting eating good again. I've had my surgery last March of 07 and I've lost 115 pounds. I feel great! Keep up the good work. It is certainly worth it.

Hi Everyone!

I've had my band put in last March of 07. I've only had two adjustments the whole time and have lost 115 pounds. I feel great most of the time, but sometimes I get reflux so bad that at times it burns the back of my throat. I went to see the doctor back in December and he opened the band all the way and said that I should feel alittle better. Well, like I said, I have good days and bad days. Does anyone else have bad reflux conditions?:huh2:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
