not enough sick time to cover sleeve, advise please

Recommended Posts

I went back after 3 weeks, but could have easily done just 2. Keep in mind, you might need some time after for follow up appts. My surgeon has terrible hours and I have to take a half day each time. For him to pay my head and say "atta girl!" Makes me mental.

I'm a band to sleeve person and I took off 8 work days. I'm on my feet most of the day and did ok. I was very tired, but was able to do my job.

I'm having a similar issue. I received 6 weeks leave. I'm currently 3 weeks post but I can't even shower daily it wears me out. I sleep around 14-16 hours a day. I work on my feet and move around a lot. Anyone else feel the same?

I work at a desk job and was back part time in less than a week. After one week of part time, I was full time.

I was completely exhausted until I was up to soft foods and could get more calories in. I went back to work at 15 days post-op, but literally went to bed as soon as I got home each day the first couple of weeks and I just had a desk job. The fatigue was definitely my main challenge in those first few weeks.

I couldn't imagine being back at work already. It's so crazy to see how many people went back so early. I'm having trouble with all food lately so I know I'm not getting enough energy, but wow kudos lol. I feel like a baby but I sit down and within twenty minutes I'm out cold for a few hours. I try to move around as much as I can.

I went back to work 10 days after my sleeve surgery (no revision). I work in an office setting and did fine at work. I will say that although I was back to work 9 hours each day, for the first 6-8 weeks after surgery I was extremely tired and in bed by about 7pm each night!

Was anyone worried about having your eating and workout habits down before starting work?

I was still on full liquids and not cleared to exercise yet when I went back to work, so that wasn't really an option for me.

I went back at 2 weeks 3 days which was 3 days into pureed foods on my nutritional plan. Physically, I felt fine to go back about a week post op, but did not want to go back on the liquid stage. I wanted to be on pureed foods for a couple of days to see how I tolerated food and to establish an eating schedule. At that point, I was only cleared to walk for exercise so it wasn't hard incorporating that into my daily schedule.

It's not an option for me either it's my biggest concern. I'm afraid I'll fail.

I think it's very normal to fear failure at this early stage. It's hard to wrap our minds around the idea that this isn't just a "diet" like all the ones we've tried and failed in the past. Your sleeve is forever! It will be there as a tool for you forever! Yes, you have to learn to properly use that tool to your greatest advantage, but you have plenty of time to learn. Right now, in the early weeks, just focus on the day-by-day living. It's hard to balance getting in all your Protein and Water and walking and Vitamins and sleep! Work on finding that balance and you don't have to be perfect right out of the gate. You can stumble through it a bit until you get it figured out. And as long as you keep working on it, you WILL get it figure out. I promise!

I had sleeve surgery and was back to work in five days. I have a tech job doing site support on a school campus ranging from network administration, software support, and hardware repair and installation. I can get away with extended time at my desk. But, I wear a fitbit, and even when I try to take it easy I manage to get in about half my ten thousand steps, so I did get fatigued frequently at first.

There are other challenges, like adding new foods and trying to stay close to a restroom, jic!

I was back at work after 2 weeks. I had sleeve and hernia repair. I could have gone back after a week. But I had a textbook recovery. I never had issues going up the post op stages or adding new food.

I had lifting restrictions but for office work I was fine. I wasn't really tired either. I was walking a lot at home anyway.

However every one is different.

At least since you have had the band you know how you tend to do under anesthesia.

I had a desk job and I was physically working from my hospital bed on day two, working from home by day 5 sitting at my desk, and back to my full-time desk job 1-week post-op. As long as you aren't doing manual labor or something that requires you be on your feet all day, you really don't need more than a week off.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
