Echocardiogram HELL NO

Recommended Posts

So my surgeon only requires an ekg, which came back normal, then my cardiologist tried to make me get an echo which will cost me 800 out of pocket. I told his ass I'm not getting it because he's just trying to make money off of me. And my surgeon only needs ekg results. Then all of a sudden he was quiet. Damn cardiologist thought he had someone who was dumb.

Actually, your Cardiologist made need something entirely different from your surgeon. Your surgeon and you need a cardiologist clearance.

Even if an EKG is what your surgeon needs, he is also relying on a report from the cardiologist. You can get an EKG from your PCP.

I got cleared without the echocardiogram. It wasn't needed

Great. If your cardiologist is comfortable clearing you without it then cool. All I was trying to say is that your cardiologist MAY need tests not required by your surgeon based on your individual situation.

Sounds a lot like the first surgeon I saw.

His requirements meant I had to use a list of folks he referred me to for all insurance requirements, plus extra things that didn't need done (including a photo series of my naked body from various angles - my face would be blurred - how lucky for me! So I could see the changes as I lost weight....Who does that with a doctor's office or with a total stranger??).

Those he referred me to were all standard specialists (cardio workup, dietitian visits, etc.) but none took insurance. So all visits out of pocket.

Right I wasn't having it. I'm not giving up extra money for no reason in particular. My surgeon only wanted ekg clearance . The cardiologist I saw said yes your ekg is great and I want to do other test just because. I told his ass hell no and to send my ekg results over to surgeon and that was all. Wasn't about to pay 800 for a test I don't need . No freaking way in hell .

My pcp did my ekg, so glad I didn't have to see a cardio. I've had my share of cocky doctors.

Glad you stood up.

He doesn't make money off of you being billed for an echo, and even if there is a referral fee, it is nowhere near the $800 you would be paying out of pocket, which let's be honest, to a cardiologist is pocket change.

When they ask for more tests it is so that if you die on the OR table your family can't come back and sue them later. He was well within his legal rights to deny you clearance, although to be fair, he didn't have to. All he has to do is document that he requested an echo, you refused, and if you do die during surgery from a condition that would have been picked up by an echo, he is liability free.

I wouldn't have wanted to pay for an $800 echo either, but he wasn't requiring it to make money off of you. He was asking you for it because whether you have it or you decline, all he has to do to shield himself from liability is note that he asked for a procedure that potentially could have saved your life, you as the autonomous patient declined, and as such your family cannot sue him. He doesn't care about your $800, and to be fair he doesn't care about you. He cares about his practice and his income and he made sure both were protected.

I wasn't decline, and secondly his nurse advised me it's an unnecessary test. There's nothing to sue when I have cardiac clearance already.

The first doctor I went to was like that too. He needed a sleep study that was 900.00 out of pocket, and a bunch of other stuff all out of pocket. I went to another doctor who didn't need any of that stuff and got me cleared through my insurance with no issues.

@@lauriev, That was another issue with the first surgeon.

When we had the initial consultation, he asked if I had been diagnosed with sleep apnea or GERD or other symptoms of heartburn. I said no sleep apnea, no digestion issues like reflux or heartburn.

He still required a sleep study and referred me to a clinic for that, and an endoscopic procedure done with another practitioner. Neither took insurance.

And then I'd need another EGD two weeks before surgery (but with HIM, who does take my insurance).

I waited a week and called to get my medical records. I was done (stick a fork in me!).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
