August '07 -- Compare pre-op diets

Recommended Posts

Now that we're all in the home stretch, I'm interested to see what pre-op regimens our doctors have us on. My doctors seem to be almost unique in that they have NO preop diet for patients. (Well, unless you count liquids the day before, and nothing by mouth for 12 hours prior to surgery, which I don't.)

So what's your doctor got you doing?

Thanks, WClady! I'm starting to get excited about this again, as the weekends roll in faster and faster. August 15 will be here before I know it!!

Hi Alexandra,

I will be banded towards the end of August. I have to do a two week pre-op diet of 5 sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfasts per day for the two weeks. And of course all the Water I can drink. I can also have Crystal Light beverages but that is it - no SF Jello, or popsicles, or anything else. I am a little concerned about this but I have made a promise to myself to follow my Docs instructions to a T.

Hope your surgery for rebanding goes smoothly. Your posts on this board really are very inspirational.

Thank you,

Michelle:ranger:

I started my pre-op on July 18. It consist of 3 oz. of lean Protein 3 times a day and 6 servings of vegetables. No carbs at all. I can fill in with sugar free popsicles, Jello, etc. I'm hungry most of the time, but it is my norm to eat alot and never experience hunger. I just keep telling myself that it is only until August 2. I have a very good doctor and I'm determined to do everything just the way he says (I have to remind myself of this about 100 times a day).

My surgery is scheduled for August 8th. I too am not required to do a pre-op diet. The doctor did ask me to try to lose weight if possible so I am just trying to cut back on the sweets. I am getting use to not drinking any pop. Hopefully I can drop a few pounds before my surgery.

Man oh man my docs must be strict. I have to do 4.5 weeks of liquid diet. first 9 days I could have 4 oz of lean Protein and 1.5 cups green veggies per day plus 4 medifast shakes. Now for the last 3 weeks, all I can have is 5 medifast shakes per day. No food and no diet beverages at all. Whew!

I know I can do it, but it is tough! (Let's face it folks, I didn't get to 250+ by liking to be HUNGRY!!!) I lost 10 pounds in the first 9 days.

The hardest parts are cooking/fixing meals for my kids and DH, plus I have 2 conferences between now and then where I am going to be out of town.

I'm planning on going off it twice this week: one salad and one small meal. But otherwise, that's it.

The madfroglady.

Banding on 8/14/07

I am on day 5 of a 2 weeks pre-op diet. Basically, cottage cheese, non-fat yogurt, one portion of chicken breast or sole fillet per day, Crystal Light, Water, sugarfree Jello and low glycemic vegtables with balsamic vinegar. It is difficult but I am surviving. It helps that I have lost 5 lbs in 4 days. Saturday night I had a cracker with light Peanut Butter on it as a treat - I never thought I'd see the day that that would be the Saturday night splurge! lol

I will be banded on Aug. 13th (pending insurance approval) and my dr. requires only liquids the day before. I am thinking that I am going to try to do slim fast a week before though.

I was only asked to lose 10 pounds not be on a preop diet. However, my doc did have a link to Optifast which I purchased a 1 week preop diet of 2 shakes in the morning and one prepackaged meal for dinner. It's only 500 calories though and I'm a nursing mommy. I am going to try and throw in a few healthy Snacks with it. I really should eat AT LEAST 1000 calories per day to keep my milk up.

You know, as I read all these preop diet posts, it is really helping me mentally. If I can do this peop stuff when I'm motivated, waiting for surgery, then the post op diet will almost seem generous. I wonder how many doctors make their pre op diet really miserable for psychological reasons to help us start to change. Any way it is giving me something to think about besides how many days left to Aug 15.

My doc only requires nothing after midnight the day of surgery. I'm trying to cut back and start my exercise program. I'm to be banded on the 27th. I keep hearing about this "fatty liver" that they want to avoid, so 2 weeks before surgery I'm going to cut out as much fat as I can. I also quit my weekend beer...

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
