Advice, Please - Surgeon vs. NUT

Recommended Posts

@@VSGAnn2014 You are such an inspiration! I hope my success mirrors yours. Thank you so much for the detailed run-down of your calories through the weight loss phases. That helps a lot.

I agree that my new NUT is much better suited to my needs. My biggest problem right now is calories. I'm getting 450-600, nearly always on the low end of that. I went to the surgeon's office for my 4 month checkup two days ago and she said my calories were fine...not to push for more; just eat what I can. Well, frankly, I'm nervous my body is going to have a hard time adjusting to double those calories...just like your NUT told you! I'm getting in all my Protein and fluids, but I don't know what to eat for more calories. I know I can't eat a larger amount of food, of course, I just feel like I need more calories. I'm meeting with my new NUT in January and I'll see what she says. I track everything on MyFitnessPal, so I'm going to have her look at that to see if she can give me some ideas.

Thanks again for your help!!! :)

Did your doc supplement or recommend B12 for energy loss and fatigue? I'm thinking of starting that now. They make it in liquid form...??

Yes. I do B12 chewables.

  • VSGAnn2014 Thanks so much for sharing the calories you had eaten and what you are doing now. I haven't had my week before surgery workshop yet so maybe they will tell me more. But if they don't this is great info that I have copied and will refer back to if I don't get any more. I have a very long journey and hope I make it to my goal of 155

You're welcome.

For me, one of the great benefits of planning, measuring and tracking my food has been that I actually know what and how much I've eaten since I've had WLS and, as a result, I can analyze that data and discover what's working for me -- to lose and/or maintain.

These days I do take breaks from tracking -- to develop my "eating healthy intuitions" (probably not the best way to express what I mean by that). But tracking my food is still a great tool I use to keep me honest when I need that discipline.

The final caveat I'll add is that, fortunately, I can lose weight without going massively low-carb. I also didn't want / need to lose weight super fast. I started at 235 pounds, lost 20 pounds pre-op, and then lost 56 pounds post-op in 8.5 months, then slowly lost another 12 pounds over the next 6 months.

Every one of us needs to discover what will work for us. And then we must find and honor the reasons to get healthy and stay healthy that will motivate us.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
