First doctor appointment since surgery.

Recommended Posts

Well I saw the Surgeon today for the first time since surgery. I lost 13 pounds since surgery on top of the 11 pounds I gained while in the hospital.

Dr never said good job or anything. He did point out that I needed to drink a min. Of 64 oz of Water a day. How does everyone else get in that much water in a day? I also need to increase my Protein to 60 grams a day. Help, I'm struggling getting all of the requirements in.

They did move me to stage 3. That's a plus. However, no rice, bread or Pasta. My next appointment isn't until Dec 8th.

Thanks for listening.

Congrats on the loss, lord knows it's hard, even with the surgery.

Im not sure how far out you are but I'm 3 weeks out and can barely make my goals, and they're not as aggressive as yours. My surgeon also just gives me a few minutes of his time to ask questions and then leaves the room, so I get the frustration.

BUT....this is YOUR STORY and YOUR BODY and as long as you're trying your best I'm sure you'll have a happy ending, like we all will. We need to be tough on ourselves but kind to ourselves and that's not easy!

Good luck to you!

My Dr was not very comforting. He is not really nice, but I got what I needed from him so he can kick rocks... Congrats on your loss, keep it up..

My moms surgeon who did her bypass was mean and made her cry, my surgeon has been understanding but has gotten a little impatient with me on certain things, like i didnt walk enough right after surgery because i was so doped up and in pain. However, he has been good on encouraging me, informing me or answering questions. I wish everyone had this, because its an emotional thing to go through.

I can tell you I haven't been honest about my water/protein consumption. I'm still under on some days, not significant enough, but enough that I can tell I need more. I'm doing the best I can and I think that's the one thing you can do. Water and Protein are important for healing so I can see why they stress this. I think just do the best you can and go from there.

I'm 7 days out and it's just going to get better :)

Btw, I forgot to say congrats on the loss. One thing I've learned in life, especially being bigger, I have to be proud of myself because who knows how others will react. It's carried me a long way in life just caring about myself and doing things for me, helped me stay strong and confident no matter what. Be proud of yourself and let that happiness shine. You did this for you, if you have a mediocre surgeon, then he is just another person in this world who probably doesn't care so much about knocking you down. Stay strong girl!

Congratulations on with your weight loss!

Really? This week starting Monday, I can have flaky fish, Mac and cheese (really soft), quinoa, hummus, small soft pastas with Tomato sauce, and all the other foods from week 1 and 2. Tuesday will be the beginning for week #3

The first week was difficult for me to get in all my liquids. My physician assistant explained to me that if you're awake for 12 hours, then you need to drink 4 oz each hour. Now we need 64 oz. My thoughts are to increase to 5-6 oz hour we can get in our liquids. I can get in 23 oz by 12 noon each day. However I struggle with the rest of the day. My students require so much more attention and I lose my focus until about 4pm (when they're dismissed from school). Lol! I normally finish 11-12 oz by then. My goal is to finish (3) 23 oz a day. I've been able to do that only 3x this week. Normally I'm still getting in 48 oz. It's tough

It's not uncommon for a doctor not to congratulate a pt on weight loss. That was the expectation. However, congrats! You're doing well. Now here's the hard part; that 60 gram of Protein & 64 ounces of Fluid is the minimum. You won't get there overnight, but each day you need to push yourself to do a bit more. In fact many doctors are changing that minimum to 75 - 80 & a lot of folks find they are more successful if they get 100grams daily. As for fluids I get mine by using my Water bottles. I take them everywhere. They are all either 20 or 24 ounces. My goal is one in the morning, one in the afternoon & one in the evening.

I'm still struggling with liquid and Protein. I have however started to drink a Protein Shake in the morning which gives me 32 grams od protein and 10 oz of Water. Rest of the day I'm sucking on a water bottle. I no longer sip as I can take bigger drinks. I'll be 3 weeks post op this coming Thursday. So taking bigger drinks helps out some what. Thanks for all the feedback.

My doctor has not been very nice or supportive. Neither has their staff.

Stay positive and remember why you did this. Surgery is only a tool and we have to do the work. Plus, it's not a walk in the park like most people like to think.

9/23/15 30 pounds lost

The dr I saw (not mine but one of his partners in the practice) didn't congratulate me either. He said don't be alarmed if you've gained or stayed the same weight as that is common. However, I have lost. He also said getting in fluids is very important to help flush.

My doctors office sells Liquid Protein so I add 2 table spoons to all my bottle waters for the day so it's 27 grams of Protein in each bottle I try an drink 3 32 ounce bottles which isn't hard for me now since I use the flavored non calorie non sugar non carb Kool aide packets on top of that I get protein from the foods I eat. I'm also a night drinker I never remember waking up and drinking I freeze my Water during the day and sit it on my night stand by my bed an wake up an drink during the night, most mornings I look and it's gone an some mornings only half is gone. Try doing that if you get up to use the restroom during the night then take a few sips of water this adds liquids to your day

I do drink in the middle of the night which helps some. I tend to forget about the amount I drink at night.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
