Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well! Please be careful with food funerals before your surgery. I had my surgery 10 days ago, and it is hard, very hard. I am glad I was weened of caffeine, fizzy drinks and carbs beforehand, because I just can't imagine how hard it would have been after if I on top everything else had to deal with withdrawals!

I quit my beloved caffeine and carbonated drinks 3 weeks ago (still dealing with withdrawal symptoms). I'm not allowing myself that even during my food funeral. I agree with you @@Pipsqueak, don't put yourself in a position for withdrawals. But I don't think that having your favorite foods one last time is going to hurt as long as you stay away from the stuff you are addicted to or could suffer withdrawal symptoms.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far.

Instead of saying goodbye to foods in quantities that helped you get to the weight you presently are, how about having a pre WLS food funeral where you eat those same foods but a small portion the way you will at the appropriate time, post WLS?

Those foods can still be enjoyed occasionally and in moderation after the surgery.

Make it an over eating funeral, that is say goodbye to overeating by eating only a small portion.

I've def used the last 12 months to say goodbye bad habits and hello to new life long habits. I gave up ALL soda September 2014. I switched to carbonated Water for a short time, but I've been fizzy free for about 10 months. Additionally, I've gotten my over eating under control, well as much control as I can have before I get my tiny tummy. I don't see eating post surgery portions as an option as there is no way possible I'd be satisfied. I consistently log my food and count calories. More recently, I consistently drink 64+ oz of Water daily. I also do not have any Pasta and potatoes as sides. My family still eats them, but I don't put them on my plate. I've made lots of positive changes to help me be successful next month. I also joined a gym. I'm walking/slow jogging 2miles on the treadmill and biking 5 miles two times a week when I go to the gym.

Thanks for the encouragement. You're right. It's not forever, just temporary. The foods in "worried" about missing are Protein. I'll just be taking a vacation from them.

I'll give up carbonated drinks and for an Irishman to give up beer is HUGE, but I will not give up caffeine! They will pry my coffee from my cold dead hand! Actually, it's either coffee or 5 hour energy.

I said goodbye to the world of food with a trip to fogo de chao. Yum! I laugh now, cause I can still do restaurants, I just have to make better choices and I have more left overs!

My last meal before my pre-op diet will be a big filet-migon.

Help! I know I shouldn't, but I am...

So some of you are aware that I have a 12 month insurance program. During this time I've lost 40lbs. I graduate on September 30th and have a surgery date of October 19th!!!

With that said, I know I shouldn't have food funerals, but now that I'm a month away I find myself saying...I want to make sure I have X before my surgery!

I monitor my weight and I'm not gaining. I am definitely not eat as large of portions, but I need help changing my mind set! I know I'm not saying goodbye to smoked BBQ and grilled chicken wings for forever...

I'm having surgery the same day! I've also had a few 'food funerals' and I think we're okay. There's something free'ing about eating what you want guilt-free and enjoying it for what it is.

I've also been noting how I feel after I eat unhealthy treats and it makes me look forward to the changes I'm going to be making.

We will remember the wonderful flavours and the enjoyment of the food we let go, but we will also remember how full and heavy and sometimes just awful those food choices made us feel.

We're saying goodbye- thus the 'funeral' part. I wouldn't worry. I think it's a normal and healthy part of the process.

And good luck with your surgery! :)

Yeah, don't do it. You're just going to gain weight that you're going to have to turn around and lose. I had a mini food funeral. By the second day I snapped out and had gained three pounds. Two months after my surgery I was depressed and crying because I was at a stall and the weigh wasn't coming off fast enough. See where I'm going with this?

I didn't do the food funeral thing and I don't regret it at all. I figured I had eaten my share of food in my life (and the share of several other people) and I didn't want to have to re-lose any weight I gained by doing so.

For me, a yummy meal brings thirty minutes or so of "joy" and weight gain brings days/weeks/months of misery trying to re-lose it.

Don't do it all during your designated pre-op. That is the time to shrink your liver and stamp in new habits and norms into your lifestyle. That said, as long as you don't make yourself ill or disqualify yourself from surgery by doing it, just do it. I had numerous last suppers and spent a good bit of money traveling to make it happen. All because I would rather have been glad I did than sorry I didn't. You can't hit everything, so choose a couple, and make sure you don't gain weight doing it. I am very content with how my last supper tour went, and I didn't want to spend the rest of my life in regret over not taking my last chance. Of course it's not good for you, but since we're here, we have obviously done it before. Note that every diet and exercise weight loss attempt also probably started with a food funeral. It's natural, don't be ashamed, but when it's time to stop it's time to stop. Godspeed.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
