What helped you eat slower?

Recommended Posts

So I am a fast eater and honestly I haven't practiced eating slower prior to surgery.

However, I am going to start this week and wanted to know if y'all had any helpful tricks/ideas that you do that helps?

I know that putting the fork down in between bites is one, but it seems like I forget that really quick.

What have y'all found that works the best for eating slower? I hate vomiting and want to avoid that at all costs, so eating slower is something I need to learn!

I found a small metal spoon in the store and bought it. I eat a lot of soft foods such as Soups and chili and I use this spoon.

Timer on my phone is the only way I am accomplishing it so far. I set 2 timers - one goes off every 1 1/2 minutes and I won't take a bite until it goes off and then reset it for the next bite. The other time is for 30 minutes and at 30 minutes, I have to stop and get rid of my plate. When I am with others and not able to watch the clock, it is harder, but once it becomes more habit, it will get easier (or so I am told).

So is it an app or just your stopwatch thing? I'm trying to explore all options and ways to s-l-o-w down. :)

My NUT has me practicing this whole thing and honestly it's harder than people realize. Especially for me because I have kids to feed and kids who need stuff and I'm hopping up and down and all around and I never get to just sit and consciously eat. It's hurry up and shove it down before the next thing comes along I have to go do. It's frustrating, but I've started making rules to help like if they didn't ask for it before we sat down, they have to wait type things and only refills will be gotten is after daddy finishes. I've started singing silly songs between bites to help time me. If you don't want to sing them out loud, do it I your head and when you finish the song it's time for the next bite. Like one of the songs I use is "hickory dickory dock, I don't want to wait for the clock! The food is getting cold the bread becoming a rock, hickory dickory dock!"then I repeat it 3 times. By then I'm ready for the next bite. Or I'll walk my fork around the entire circumference of the plate like I'm being a clock. It's childish, I'll admit, but it works for keeping me timed without a timer. I just set the egg timer for the 30 min mark and I've really gotten the hang of it! The only part I am having trouble with is that I over spicy my food and then I'm crying for a drink of Water to kill the heat while I wait!

@@_Brooke_ - Just the timer on my phone. No app needed. Though I do know that there are some that exist. I also use it when I know I need to drink more so I set it for every few minutes and make myself sip - for an hour or so. :)

After the first time you get chicken stuck because you didn't slow down and chew well or you eat faster than the food can move and it hurts like heck, you'll be more aware. I used small spoons and forks and a eating timer on my phone to prevent future mishaps. It really hurts!

@Daisee68...Those are great ideas. I am going to try doing them. It can be hard to slow down when you're used to always being rushed. And it makes sense to be done in 30 minutes.

I love all the ideas and helpful tips!

@@Daisee68 I tried the timer thing last night and it was so much harder than I thought it would be!! I definitely need to practice more.

@@mskami77 What you said rang a bell with me. My mother said the same thing a few days ago! :)

I got to check out the bariatric timer app on tablet. It seems like it takes forever for me to eat and then I realize I'm gulping the food. That's not going to work post op!

I found an app and it's called "slow mow eating timer".. it was .99 but I feel like $1 is definitely worth it! I have been using it all day to really concentrate on eating slower and I have to say this app is quite impressive. You can set it to make a sound, buzz, or flash on your screen which is helpful if you're out and about. I tried the bariatric timer, but wasn't feeling the whole donut bit. Lol

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
