getting frustrated with water intake

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping someone can shed a little light for me here. My surgeon that performed my sleeve was not the surgeon that discharged me, but rather a partner surgeon within the same facility. He stressed that I need to be getting 64 Oz of Water in each day. I'm getting frustrated because I'm only able to get about 20 Oz in on a good day. Since I'm supposed to wait 30 minutes after drinking to eat, and 60 minutes after eating to drink, but I'm only supposed to sip water....how do I fit this all in a day? I will have my 2 week post op in 2 weeks, but that's a week behind because the surgeon is so booked. I just really really don't want to get dehydrated. I've had that problem while I was pregnant and couldn't even keep water down.

Ok, don't beat yourself up. It takes time to get there and figure it all out. Your stomach is still swollen, so it takes a while to be able to drink. Regardless of what the dr told you, most dr and NUT's don't expect you to hit all your Protein and Fluid goals in the first couple of weeks. You definitely don't want to dehydrate, so make that your number one goal. Having said that, my NUT counts my Protein drinks as "fluid", so I count that towards my goal. I am 3 months out and don't always get there (but don't use me as an example!) My best suggestion is to sit down tonight after dinner and after the kids are in bed and use a 1 oz. medicine cup and set a timer for every 5 minutes an sip 1/3 to 1/2 of the cup every time your timer goes off. At the end of an hour, you will have 4 oz in. (You may be able to do more than that by now. if you can, do so, but likely no more than 8 oz an hour). If you can do that a couple of times a day, it will help. Be patient with yourself. It will come in time and this 1st week memories will be far behind you.

Now that I said that, I am going to take my own advice and get some Water....

I have the same problem. It feels like all I am doing is eating and drinking. Having to eat 7 meals a day and fit the drinking inbetween is taking up so much time, and I was told to only drink 4 oz each time I drink. So I am not able to get the adviced ammount of fluids in during a day.

@@LillyWSL - Curious why 7 meals a day. That seems a bit excessive. Most of us are told 3 meals and 2 Snacks and within that I consider Protein 1 or 2 of those. Also, when they say only 4 oz of Fluid at a time, I think that is really in the very beginning. The Fluid will move through your stomach and most of us here can drink 16 oz an hour by 3 or 4 weeks out. You cannot chug 4 oz by any means (regardless of how far out you are), but I cannot think of any reasons why you would be restricted to only 4 oz at each fluid "sitting"

I was told 3 small meals & 3 Snacks as well, they gave me an estimated "schedule" that goes as follows:

8am Breakfast

10am snack

12pm lunch

3pm snack

6pm supper

8pm snack

At this time I cannot bring myself to drink another shake, however I ordered unflavored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury powder so I'm waiting for that to arrive. I was never told no more than 4oz at a time, would've been good to know lol. Not that I'm getting that down anyway. The surgeon also said I could progress to soft foods before being discharged. So at least I've been getting an average of 40 grams of Protein in each day. I will try to sit down & set aside time each hour to drink, I like that idea. Makes it seem a little more manageable.

That's your goal. You do your best each day to get as close to that as possible. It won't happen overnight and it may not happen within the first month, but eventually you'll get there. Things that helped me:

  • Starting my day off with a glass of Water.Even if it's just 4 ounce Put it by the bed and have it first thing.
  • Adding ice to my Protein drinks. Good for at least a quarter cup of Water.
  • Carrying a water bottle with me everywhere.

Most people work up to 64 ounce by month 2, some sooner. Give yourself time. Just remember the goal is to get in your Protein and stay hydrated.

Did the doctor said 64 ounce of water or fluids? For most of us, it's fluids. That pretty much includes anything liquid so your Fluid intake would be a combination of Protein Drinks and water intake.

No your body needs rest just as much as it needs physical nourishment. Start your day when you wake.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
