Hunger cravings after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

So in my research, i found that many people actually have to remind themselves to eat after surgery. Is this true? And if so, how soon does this take effect?

What i read was that in the part of the stomach that is removed is a gland that gives off a hormone that signals to your brain that your stomach is empty. Is this accurate?

Hunger feels different for me than before WLS. It's extremely uncomfortable and becomes nauseating if I don't do something about fairly quickly. The good news is that I don't feel it very often through the day.

For the first 3-4 weeks after surgery, I felt hunger as normally would and then by week 8 it had mostly gone away. Hunger is now more like "I feel weak, I should eat something"

When I could actually tell the difference between head hunger and real hunger, I found that I'm actually ever rarely "really" hungry.

But when I am, boy am I!

I still get hungry occasionally. When it happens I am more likely to eat too fast/too much and end up with a stomachache or vomiting. I eat my 3 meals/day and 1-2 Snacks. A cheese string goes a long way to curb any hunger for me!

My significant other has to "strongly remind" me to eat sometimes. Other times I feel deathly hungry but can only eat small portions. Crazy sleeve :)

Yes, the portion of your stomach that releases the hunger hormone, grehlin (sp), is in the portion of the stomach removed during surgery.

I am 8 weeks. I have never been physically hungry. I did have a lot of head hunger the first 2-3 weeks post-op. My head hunger does not connect to my stomach, so it is much easier to ignore and let pass. Now my head hunger is pretty much over. I don't crave bad things.

From what I have heard that is true, also u have to remind urself to drink something. Be very careful to get the required amnt of fluids in, as I saw someone that didn't and it caused great health problems

I am 31 days out and I have hunger hunger (not head hunger). It's not quite as strong as it was before the surgery and I can wait the hour or two until my next meal but it is still there and still annoying. I carry around Quest Bars and will eat half of one if it's an hour until lunch or dinner and my stomach is growling. I'm hopeful that this will decrease in time as I start eating more. And I must admit that my hunger pre-surgery was out of control and ridiculous for some reason I don't understand so at least it's better.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
