very slow weight loss/please need advice

Recommended Posts

I know i have said this before, and don't mean to repeat myself, but the weight is so slow coming off. I was 253.5 on surgery day 8/3. Today is 1 month surgiversary and down 9lbs as of last Thursday, 245lbs, why. Has anyone or know someone that has truly failed at the gastric sleeve.I failed at every other diet, and although this is not a diet, I think I am failing at this too. My clothes feel no different today, then they did last week, and I don't want to freak, so scared to weigh. See doc 9/9. NUT no help. I am getting 70-90 gms of Protein. Not 64oz of Water, just cannot fit it in, but about 48oz. No junk what so ever, totally sticking to the food plan. I am eating between 600-750 calories a day. Does anyone have any ideas, or have been through this. I feel like i am going to miss the honeymoon phase, then what. Thanks for any advice, and for just listening.

Hi...that's what I am worried about for the very same reason that you are thinking...screwed up metabolism because of too many failed diets, right? My surgery is Oct 14 & I have been thinking the VERY same thing....which is what u r going actually going thru. Did u go thru any kind of prep before the surgery? Do u have a low Bmi to start with? Have you had any bowel movements? This last one I ask because when I was on Dr Bernstien's, I would get asked the same thing...so may be a reason why u show 9 pound loss...have u been eating too much salt, perhaps? I will keep checking this to see what is causing this & I hope it picks up for you quickly...there has GOT to be a valid reason....& as I said before, I have the fear which is a reality for you right now.....I hope u get an answer or that your body kicks into gear & starts burning quickly!! Best of luck! I am praying for u!!

I wish I had some advice or answers to offer you. :( I, too, worry about this. I'm 2 weeks and 4 days post op and I've lost about 10 pounds. It seems so, so low compared to what a lot of people are losing their first weeks. Logically I know it's certainly possible that our bodies are just holding onto whatever they can, and eventually we will both start losing normally. Logically I know a lot of people have this issue where they begin with a weight loss stall right after surgery and then suddenly it will pick up and start working. But I have this nagging fear deep in a dark corner of my brain that nothing has ever worked right with my body and losing weight before... so why should it now? I've always messed up before, so why should I be doing it right now? I think these are fears that so many of us have because we spent years of our lives thinking we were wrong or bad in some way because of our weight, and being made fun of or treated badly or looked down upon because of how we looked. Hang in there (I'm saying this to you,@@More than this, myself, and any other person who has had to deal with the pain and absolute bullshit that is being overweight in our society and anyone who doubts themselves because of that). You've made the right choice. You knew this wasn't going to happen overnight. You're doing everything right here. Things will pick up, and by this time next year you'll be wondering why you ever doubted yourself in the first place.

Take care of yourself, all of you! <3 :)

Most likely three week stall. Be patient, it will come off.

Everyone is different. Hour body is adjusting. I lost quick but then hit plateaus for a week. That is a shocking revelation. I think once your body adjust the weight will follow. 1 week out you're still full of Fluid and gas.

I'm on a plateau now for approaching 2 weeks. I know it's frustrating. Sometimes you have to up your calories to get your body out of starvation mode.

You really can't tell at this point if you are a slower loser.

STOP!!! Now, take a deep breathe........ relax. You really don't have reason to panic a mere month after surgery unless you are experiencing a medical problem. You're body may still be adjusting from surgery, everyone is different, it sounds like you're doing what you're supposed to,just be patient and keep working with your surgical team. You are going through a lot of changes right now and one of them is the dreaded "three week stall" sometimes it's a week late. I think someone on here explained it one time, but it's just another physiological adjustment to your new eating regime and changes to your diet, it will pass. I would suggest taking a three month wait and see approach, if you feel that you're still struggling with old habits and feelings, start taking advantage of group sessions usually at your local bariatric hospital, or a lot more BP postings, everyone wants to help you succeed, so take advantage of the help. In the meantime relax and enjoy the ride. Good Luck!

BTW- what did they tell you was the length of the "honeymoon phase"?

Definitely sounds like the 3 wk. stall so don't be discouraged. I had a 3 month stall and know how disappointed one can get. I thought I had escaped the stall but it hit later. Just stay true to self and know that when you continue to eat small the weight has to come off. I am a slow loser but I Continue to lose. This will work for you. Talk with your nutritionist if you need to but don't be discouraged. Success is waiting for you just around the corner.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
