First vacation with sleeve - 12 Weeks Out - My Experience

Recommended Posts

I was concerned how I would be able to handle my first vacation after being sleeved. Just got back yesterday and I have to say it was a success. We do enjoy eating out on vacation and we still did eat out a lot, but I was very careful with my choices. I ate chicken but when I got bored with that, I had spare ribs (could only eat two); smoked turkey; steak; and grilled shrimp - all in very small portions. I ordered the smallest portions I could (sometimes ordering off the appetizer menu). I listened to my stomach and stopped as soon as I felt that restriction. I did walk at least four miles everyday on the beach. We were also with my sister and her husband and she had a harder time with what I was eating. She kept saying she felt bad for me because I couldn't eat much, but I kept telling her don't feel bad for me because I don't feel bad and I do feel good about myself.

The truth is I did miss eating all the usual vacation type foods a bit - ice cream, alcohol, chocolate, Italian food etc. but I am down 40 pounds and as they say - nothing tastes as good as being thin feels. But I only missed the foods for the moment, once that passed, I felt good about my choices.

It also felt good that I was able to wear clothes on my vacation that I hadn't fit into in years. I still felt self-conscious in a bathing suit, but that is my insecurity.

I hope that once I am down to my goal weight (40 pounds to go) I will be able to occasionally enjoy some treats.

For now I feel good, I am thrilled with my progress and am looking forward to many more vacations with my newer slimmer body!

Thanks for all your support!

Congratulations Daisy Girl! Vacations and celebrations are a big minefield so it's nice to know it's possible to negotiate that successfully. I have my first extended family Sunday dinner tonight. Not sure how it will go! And next week I'm eating out with folks who don't know about my sleeve. Planning to go to an Indian restaurant, so I know I can order palak paneer and raita, which are soft.

I think only people who had had surgery can understand how full you can feel on very little food. Prior to surgery I would have never believed it. 6oz of fish feels like a 3 course meal to me.

I hate for people to think I am deprived when I feel exactly the opposite

I'm glad your vacation was a success.

I am so glad for you. I can't wait to be able to walk on the beach again.

I just went on a road trip this weekend with my parents. It was so funny because I was sleeved in April so was really particular about where we stopped for fast food. My dad is in the process of getting dental implants so can only eat soft foods. So, we ate at Wendy's a couple of times. Where I just had a small chili, he could do a small chili, baked potato and a Frosty. My mom still offers me food off her plate. Lately, I'll let her give me something like a couple of cherry tomatoes, or s tiny taste of her Protein. His last comment was "boy, I never knew eating could be such hard work." We shared a laugh over that one because certainly agree.

Why is it people think we are deprived? I get that all the time! "You poor thing, you can only eat a couple of bites." Pfft, that couple of bites is like a whole plate to you, is what I want to say. I so wish others outside of here could get it!

And congrats on your vacation @@Daisy Girl, sounds like you had a great time!

I just got back from a cruise, and my experience was similar. I am almost 5 months out, and my goal was not to gain any weight over the week. I brought some nuts and Protein Bars with me, and focused on Protein and drinking my Water. I walked on deck, went to the ship's gym, and did a lot of walking during our excursions. I love that the portions in the dining room were generally small, and I ate fish and seafood a lot. Had a few bites of dessert on occasion, and I was down 1 pound on my return. I was really pleased because the wifi on board was spotty, and I didn't get to log all my foods the way I do at home. Most importantly, I had a fabulous time.

Glad to hear you did well too!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
