HI everyone. My surgery is tomorrow and I'm a bit nervous but excited as well. I followed the 2 week Protein diet/drinks for the most part but did have some sashimi on one occasion (had to go to client lunch).

So would anyone like to give me some last minute advice, assurance, words of wisdom :-)?

What is the deal with the left shoulder pain that everyone speaks of? Thanks!

I will explain. I was in the same situation as you.. nervous but excited. I did a Protein diet for about 7 days and skim milk, etc etc.

You do not feel anything during the surgery as you are completely knocked out. Once you wake up you will be in the recovery room with slight nausea. Eventually the surgery effect kicks out and they will give you morphine once or twice. After an another hour you will be back in your room and see your family :). You will be off and on sleeping for a few hours.

The left shoulder pain started for me the next day due to the carbon gas they pump in you to seperate your organs (making it easier to perform the surgery). Its some effect due to nerve pressure from the gas. Make sure you take pain killers 4 times a day for 4 days (as your dr may say) and keep consistent. After 4-5 days it will go away. With the meds the pain subsides.

Thats IF you even get shoulder pain...

other than that wish you the best of luck and you will be fine. I am on day 6 and I have lost 5 kgs - 11 pounds - probably due to the fact that I am on a liquid diet post op.. but 11 pounds IS 11 pounds.

Hello All!

I am new, this is my first post. I have been working since June to get approved to have Lap Band, and I finally was! My surgery date is September 28th. I have started my pre-op diet.

I am really excited, truly i am! But every once in a while I get kinda nervous and start thinking about having some foreign plastic object in my body... :-/

Then I have to talk myself down and assure myself this is what i want! And everything is going to be okay.

Any words of encouragement?

Have y'all been having good results?

thanks, heather

Hi Heather,

I was just banded yesterday . Everything will be ok. As far as the foreign object in your body..I was nervous too but there are people who have metal plates, rods, pacemakers , etc..so compared to those devices, lapband is nothing! Good luck with the preop diet. It really prepares you for post op diet. Please keep in touch and you can email me directly at starosen@yahoo.com.

My wife and I were banded on September 12, 2007. I have a 4cc band and my wife has a10cc band.

Between the two of us we have lost way over 200 lbs while neither of us are at goal the quality of life is huge.

for our 35 anniversary last June we went Parasailing we would not have been able to do that 8 years ago.

Otherwise , moving along with the limited amount of food consumtion(broths, shakes, ice pops). Any suggestions for the gas and Constipation? Thanks for reaching out!!

Starosen. The gas will automatically go after a few days. You may have a slight left shoulder pain but my recommendation is to take the painkillers as the Dr prescribed for at least 4 to 5 days even if you think the pain subsides.

Hi Starosen, I haven't had my surgery yet, I'm in on the 26th & doing pre op diet at the moment. I did have a csection in June and was given a liquid laxative maybe check with your dr & see if you could take some.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
