Pindoctor. I am so sorry you are having such a hard time getting your approval. Have you tried calling them yourself to see what the holdup is? Sometimes it is something as easy as paperwork from the doctor diagnosis codes etc. It may be something all you have to do is call your doctor to have correct. Keep your spirits up. Keep your spirits up and keep us posted on how it turns out.

I agree, Pindoctor, call the insurance and ask if they have any questions or issues with what was submitted. Years ago when I had my Lapband, I called the insurance and asked if they had any questions and someone actually called me back. I was able to clarify what they had questions about and was approved quickly after that.

Keep you chin up, you are almost there

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to call the insurance today and keep insisting that I talk to someone's supervisor until I get a response. Their response on Wednesday was "we have no information for you when your case will be reviewed." Now I am on day 10 of the liquid diet and I'd really like an answer one way or the other. The insurance liason for the bariatric program says what is happening to me is quite unusual. They generally get responses from my insurance company in 1-2 weeks. So I don't understand the problem.

Today I spent 45 min on the phone with my insurance company and fortunately got someone who seemed to want to help me. She recognized that the surgery was scheduled next Wednesday and she tried to reach the authorization people to try to get my case expedited. Unfortunately they were all gone for the weekend so she will dog this down on Monday and said she'd be able to tell me something by Monday afternoon. This is cutting it close but at least someone is trying to help me rather than just blow me off like they did on Wednesday. I'm still doing ok on the liquid diet and hopefully it will not be for nothing. Wish me luck.

I had my pre op assessment yesterday (uk). I asked about the pre op diet and was told that my surgeon in particular doesn't request his patients to go on a diet however if I was under the care of 1 of the other 2 surgeons they would have liked me to go in a 2 week milk diet!! My surgery is next Friday! conflicting information... Maybe if should just do a strict liquid diet.. guess it can't hurt. Has anyone else been told they don't need to be on a pre op diet??

Hey September Sleevers,

Quick update...I had my pre-op physical exam with my PCP, and it went quit well. My starting weight in April was 343, and yesterday I weighed 311, so she was totally pleased with my weight loss so far. She cleared me for surgery, but gave me one hell of a pep talk, reiterating that this is just a tool and how it will require a lifestyle change, etc.

I was supposed to start my liquid diet this week but my grandpa passed away on Sunday, and I've been so busy making arrangements for his service that I didn't get a chance to go get my broth, Proteins, etc. so I'm planning to start this coming Monday. I was told the doctor prefers it so they have more room to see during surgery (liver reduces in size). However, i was told I just needed to make sure I'm on Clear liquids only 48 hours before surgery and no liquids period after midnight the day prior to surgery. They also gave me a surgical solution they want me to bathe with before coming in for surgery.

I'm having my procedure done by Dr. Scott Cunneen at Cedar Sinai Medical Center/ Center for weight loss. My surgeon is the director of the minimally invasive surgery department as well, so that put me at ease. They are huge on safety at Cedars, and they constantly remind me that my surgery will be cancelled if I don't follow their instructions regarding nothing but Clear Liquids 48 hours prior, and no smoking 8 weeks prior.

At this point, I'm ready to start my new life. I'm going to reinstate my 24 hr fitness membership that's been on freeze this whole year, and I have a 24 right in the parking lot of my job, so there's no excuses. This time, I will be successful, and I'm looking forward to doing it will all of you.

My Bariatric doc doesn't require a pre-op diet.

Amberc425, you mention the no smoking 8 weeks pre-op. I found out last week that my doctor turned down two patients because they smoked and weren't planning on quitting after surgery. Tough love I guess.

I'm so glad I quit, it's been 13 years on Sept 17th. My surgery is set for Sept 16th, so I'll have two anniversaries to Celebrate in the coming years.

When is your surgery set for?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
