Not able to have a drink or food for breakfast

Recommended Posts

I got the lap band on 2013 (February) it has work for me excellent from 387lbs im down to 203lbs, the only thing is that the first meal of the day will get stuck right away and have to throw up. After a couple of hours I can have a meal perfectly fine. Any recommendations!?

I have been banded over 4 years and since then I have never had a solid breakfast....I've tried, but just wrote it off.

What I do have, aside from my coffee, is make a high Protein smoothie in the blender with fresh fruit, etc.

40gm of protein to start the day....try to match that with anything traditional.

I note in the lapband forums, that many bandsters have issues with their band feeling tight in the morning.

Protein shakes seem to fill the void for those of us who can't do an egg, or bacon etc. in the AM.

After years of trying, I have resolved myself to some sort of Protein Drink for Breakfast.< /p>

It is often 11 or noon for me personally to have solids...and then clear sailing the rest of the day.

It is only trying when friends want to meet for breakfast...I'll be happy to have a cup of coffee with them... Tho I do understand that some people feel odd when their companion is not joining them eating at a meal

Such is life with WLS ( and I would not go back for anything )????

I 've heard that something hot to drink 1st in the morning "opens up " the band, which gets compressed from sleeping on it all night. I cant tolerate much food in the morning so I have a cup of hot tea or cocoa to wake the band up, then slowly nibble on "safe " breakfast foods , like almonds, turkey Jerky, a cheese stick or a homemade smoothie. Hope this helps, good luck !!

Hi there, way to go on your weight loss; that's fantastic! I am also in the no breakfast club -- I don't get hungry until later so for me it's brunch or lunch. I drink tea in the morning and enjoy the ease of that. Whether it is solid food or a shake, I am not ready to tolerate anything for those first hours of the day. shakes even late in the day can be tricky for me -- not sure why but something about the thickness and cold temperature. Good luck with all -- you are doing great!

This is how morning tightness was explained to me and makes sense, at least to me.

We sleep prone, and during that time our blood is no longer pooling in our lower extremities. I used to have severe foot edema. At night my feet and lower legs were like sausages. In the morning I could see the bones in my feet again, since the evening swelling had dissipated.

My stomach is made of living tissue, and the fixed band is encircling an area that swells and unswells based on many factors. Gravity is one big factor.

So it's really just like swollen feet, but affected by gravity in the opposite direction. During the day, gravity pulls blood down and away from my band area. The stomach tissue isn't squeezed by the band as much.

Overnight, more blood gets back up into that area because I'm not standing up. The tissue plumps up, and the band is a bit tighter around it. I wake up the "tightest" I will be all day. The more I walk around vertical, the more that eases throughout the day.

I'm no doctor, but this makes perfect sense to me and matches how I feel in the early morning and then as the day goes on. I have the least "restriction" late in the evening.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
