My surgeon has told me that I need to be on Omeprazole (Prilosec) for a year post-op to promote the healing of my new stomach. From what I'm reading online, a lot of surgeons only have their patients take it for as little as 3 days, up to 3 months. I plan to follow my surgeons orders obviously, but just wanted to hear others experience. How long were you told to take it, if at all?

My surgeon put me on pantoprazole (Protonix) for 3 months. It's a PPI.

I'm back on ranitidine now -- 40 mg twice a day (which is what I was on pre-op).

I really didn't want to take it at all. My surgeon cut mine to 3 months because I put up a stink.

1 month here. No issues except for 1 day I had heartburn...took an OTC PPI for one day and was fine again.

Mine said I would be on it for the rest of my life, I thought no way, stopped taking it after 4 months and now 1 1/2 years out I found I had to start it again

I take Omeprazole everyday and have for 10 years. Won't bother me to continue it as long as I can get rid of some of my other meds.

I absolutely would refuse to take it ever and the surgeon would have to figure something else out.

I used to take Omeprozole every day and had taken it for a couple of years. Back in 2011 I was at my sister-in-law's parents' house and I fell off the bottom porch step. I broke the scaphoid bone in my left wrist. I had to have surgery to have a pin inserted and I had to wear a cast for 12 weeks.

The orthopedic surgeon was shocked I broke that bone. I was 48 at the time and normally that bone is extremely rarely broken in women especially at my age. The typical break comes from a 20 something guy while he's doing extreme sports.

We reported it to the FDA and not too long after that the FDA came out with a black box warning on Omeprozole that it can cause broken bones in women. I will NEVER take that again.

Ok I am a newbie. WIll be one month tomorrow on a supervised diet. Why would I need to take this Omeprazole (Prilosec)? Is it for heartburn and why would there be heartburn if we are hardly eating the first 3 months? Is the heartburn really that bad that you have to take meds for it? Many many years ago I use to have acid reflux that got in my throat at night and the ranitidine helped. That acid burning in my throat was horrible, I would hate to think I will have that feeling again. Hockeyfan that was terrible what happened to you. If you don'tus Prilosec what do you take?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
