Vitamins, protein shakes, etc

Recommended Posts

My head is spinning reading all this preop information. Since I am having to pay for the procedure out of pocket, I am hoping you all have some suggestions for cheaper Vitamins, shakes, etc. The site they're recommending to me is outrageous (in my opinion)

Thanks!

I know what you mean. I did buy some of their products but also other products as well. I've tried Premier Protein shakes (my favorite), EAS complete Protein Powder, Gold standard Protein powder, Unjury protein powder. I also bought some opurity bariatric Vitamins. I also take a few vitamins from costco.

My nutritionist recommended I could use regular chewable supplements just not Gummy version because those lack certain minerals. I'm using chewable Centrum and Caltrate chewable. My nutritionist is okay with those. The most important thing about buying Vitamins is to read the label, theres a "bariatric" Vitamin sold at Walgreens that requires 4 pills/day to get the recommended daily doses.

As for Protein shakes if you like the taste of Premier Protein, the best price I found is costco online. They sell a double case of 36 for $49.99. its free shipping and you don't have to be a member to order (I had to pay a surcharge of $7.50). If you want to use a powder, i suggest you to try buy a sample first, you don't want to buy a huge tub and realize that you don't like the taste.. Hope this helps. Best of luck

I buy my shakes from GNC, the total lean brand with 25 gr Protein per container. Also get Isopure protein Water from GNC. As for Vitamins, I get mine in liquid form from a local health food store. But a friend of mine uses the flintstone chewables and really likes them

I just recently bought Walgreens Vitamins for women 50+. It has all the nutrient values plus more than the bariatric Vitamin that was recommended for my plan. The bariatric Vitamin was over 5X the cost. What a racket.

The costco shakes might not be a bad idea. I overbought on the big canisters of whey Protein powder because I wanted a variety of flavors. I think I must have enough left for at least three years.

I was doing the Flintstone chewable prior to surgery because I cannot swallow Vitamin pills. Initially the surgeon had me take 2 a day, but now I'm back to just one. They are definitely cheaper than the bariatric Vitamins, and you can get coupons in the paper periodically.

I like the unjury, and I order from their website. Even with shipping it is cheaper than buying it at the doctor's office. So annoying! Like they are not getting enough money from me and my insurance company!

Trader Joe's has low-priced Vitamins. I take their High Potency chewable for my multi and my labs have always been great.

Target (Pure Protein) and Wal-Mart (Body Fortress) both sell inexpensive Protein powders that lots of people like. The downside is that you can't sample before buying a big tub, so if you end up being one of the people who hate them, you are out of luck.

You can buy a lot of samples before surgery from NashuaNutrion.com. Then after surgery, you can test the samples and see what you like before committing to buying a bigger tub. Don't stock up on big tubs before surgery as your tastes might change. The protein powders they sell are more expensive than what you would find at Wal-Mart or Target, but at least you will be buying something you know you like. My favorite brands they sell are Syntrax Nectar, Syntrax Matrix, and Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard. You can also buy these brands at most GNC and Vitamin Shoppe stores if you prefer to buy in person after testing some samples from Nashua.

Most larger grocery stores will also have perfectly good protein powders for cheap. Just be sure to read the labels and that you are okay with the ratio of calories/carbs/protein.

You can also go to GNC and see what they have on sale. Again, be careful about the nutrition label -- GNC sells a lot of products more geared toward people who want to bulk up and pack on muscle than to people who want to lose weight. Talk to a sales person and tell them you want low calorie and low carb. The good thing about GNC is that if you buy a tub, take it home, try it, and don't like it, you can bring it back for a refund. I believe Vitamin Shoppe works the same way, but of course ask in advance at any store.

I use health wise gummy vitamins from Costco! I take two per day.

As far as shakes go, I am in LOVE with Fit Frappe brand... Their mocha flavor tastes like a chocolate chip frappe from Starbucks but less sweet.. with 21g of protein! I love that they can be used hot, cold or blended without curdling or grittiness! I tried GNC totally lean... Instant nausea. Premier Protein from costco is great as well and I use it when I'm on the go!

Here's where you can buy fit frappe: https://www.bigtrain.com/t-protein-mix-powder-fit-frappe.aspx

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
