I had surgery with Dr. Aceves in Mexico in April. He and his staff were wonderful and it cost $8200 (everything included). I was referred to him by a nurse from the mayo clinic. All I can say is really do your homework. I haven't heard anything bad about the doctors you mentioned but you want to make sure you get the best treatment you can for your money. Good Luck!

I looked into Rumbault too and found MANY good things...he was a choice for me. Dr. Aceves receives a lot of kudos too. I've heard Dr. Kuri isn't doing so hot lately, but was good before. The biggest complaint is that the hospital staff doesn't speak english well and that can be an issue. One friend who had the surgery down there said that she complained of pain for two hours and wasn't helped until her husband showed up...he went out for a bit. For this reason, and others, I HIGHLY recommend taking someone with you. Now, this could increase your expenses....

I am going with Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver. He is one of the very few US docs who actually have a PACKAGE (imagine! - yes, that was sarcasm). I am self-pay too so cost was a major issue. I will be paying $9950, but that doesn't include housing or flights. Still, I get to stay in the states and that that is something BIG for me.

I have not heard of any of the Mexico horror stories, actually quite opposite. I hear that you're treated very well and the accomodations are quite nice.

Good luck with your choice.

Hello jdhj861jr:

I was banded by doctor Francisco Gonzalez in Tijuana, Mexico. I am very excited when I recommend him, because even though he is not so well know on the web, he is very well know outside the web. He has never really been a doctor who likes or does marketing. He has been very focused on his work and his patients. Just recently a few of us (patients) got together and talked doctor Gonzalez into using the web to let people know about his work. He is an unbelievable doctor, he is very very kind and made me feel like family. He is young (44) and very skilled. His staff is fluent in English and so is his patient coordinator Laura, and his nutritionist Dr. Veronica Castaneda and also Dr. Valenzuela who handles clinical management, language is never a barrier. My results have been very good I've lost 80 pounds and am very pleased. I've had adjustments done as I see necessary and Dr. Gonzalez has always greeted me with a smile on his face (he never charges for adjustments). Call Laura at 619-710-5757 or go to GO LAP-BAND. She can arrange a phone consultation with Dr. Gonzalez or Dr. Valenzuela.

Don't base your decision on price alone. Do lots of homework and make sure you feel comfortable with your choice. I went to Dr. Valencia and was very happy. I wanted to pick someone that had strong connections to medicine in the United States. He was not the cheapest, but he was also not the most expensive. I thought the price was very reasonable for the care I got and the hospital was top notch. Good luck!

I gotta put in my 2 cents for Rumbaut. After much research, my wife and I finally chose him, and have been satisfied completely thus far. We were banded in April, went back for the first fill in May and things are moving along well. They really take care of ya while your in Monterrey, all the details and logistics are arranged for you, English speaking folks at the hotel, and the medical staff are all easily accessible while your there aqnd after you return to the states. We've nothing but good stuff to report about Dr. Rumbaut's practice. Hope you find the right doc for you!

Well because you asked I feel good in responding. It is important to choose a Dr. that has more than a fair price for banding. If you should encounter a complication (and they do happen) you want a Dr. that will treat you. Most complications occur a couple days after banding and if you go with the lo end Docs you will be home when the problems arrise. I looked into this and found that the Dr.s of Getbandednow.com kept you from Monday to Thursday. They speak perfect English and have amazing support long long after banding. In fact they require you keep in contact with them. They consistently give nutritional guidance and emotional support 24/7. Gotta tell you they are by far the best. The nutrional specialist travels all over the US speaking on womens nutrition and weightloss issues. One other thing is that they are always available. They always answer the phone and emails. They seem to really care that you lose the weight and stay healthy. Well thats about it givem a call they are very very good...

:peace:

If you want the best care possible and not be about the fee, go to the team at getbandednow.com. Lead surgeon is a FACS (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons). They use a full Anethesiologist a second surgeon and a surgical nurse. Hard to get that care anywhere for same fee. They really are cool. Their support is amazing 24/7!

Good luck with your choice.

I have not only heard of Horror stories I know of several first hand. We dumb Americans think that surgery is like shopping for shoes. The lowest price is the best shoe. Not so with surgery. You get what you pay for.

If the fee is low so is the quality of service. For example Folks at Bajanor gave a lady a band that she should never had gotten. She was not healthy enough for surgery but because they did not spend the money for quality pre op tests they never knew it. Three weeks after getting banded she died at home. The surgery was 6500.00 The pre op tests if done properly can be as much as 1500.00. So if the fee is low you are not getting safe medical treatment. These stories are not released because the low fee (dr.s) don't tell folks about the problems. They hide the facts.

The Dr.s at Getbandednow.com keep you for four days! Their protocol is amazing and so is their sucess rate. Its less than buying a used car.

OK enough horror stories. Just know this that if you are getting a short protocol a low fee placement something is being sacraficed and it could very well be your life.

I go to Mexico regularly. I meet these Dr.s and hear them speak of how some high profile surgeons treat their patients and it is alarming.

Dr verboonen of Obesity goodbye just got out of Federal Prison for insurance fraud! Yet he offers low fee banding. If you have a problem you are going to find they don't answer the phone. Or if go there they make you sit in the office all day because they say they have emergencies to take care of. Yeah right. They are hoping you will go away is all. Low fee means poor treatment. Its a matter of when that treatment is needed by you.

its just not worth it.

I'm new and I am also shopping for a doctor. I looking in Tijuana. I've heard some really bad things about Dr. Verboonan and the Bajanor clinic. I have also been looking at Dr. Kuri, Ortiz and Dr. Valencia. Where is Dr. Aceves? Is he in Tijuana? I went to the getbandednow site and I can't figure out where they are. I'll also look at the golapband site. I'm leaning towards Dr. Valencia. He seems to have the most impresive credentials. I would really love some feed back from you all! Thanks.

Just for full disclosure, purposes, I have to ask - Mattintosh, are you in any way financially connected to Getbandednow?

I've seen posts where you talk about what 'we' recommend to patients, so it seems that you're in the industry somehow, and you're frequently telling folks to got to getbandednow.

So, because some are seeing a possible conflict of interest, can you let us know?

And no answer about whether you are financially connected to them at all.

hmmmmm.

Aceves is NOT in TJ, which is a positive. TJ is NOT a safe city. Notice most docs in TJ will provide pick up and drop off for their patients at the airport and at their hotel? Not only is it a nice service, it is a NECCESSARY service. One bandster (kaelin'sgma, I think) on here a couple of months ago posted how her son who went with her (adult) got kidnapped in TJ and held for money.

Not to say do not go to TJ, just be very careful.

Bad things happen in the US and in Mexico. I drove myself to TJ for my surgery, parked my car on the street overnight and had no problems. I also drive myself to get fills(alone). I'm not saying there aren't horror stories out there, but it isn't like going to TJ is going to a back alley chop-shop either. I used Dr.Ortiz and although I've experienced a slip, I would still recommend The Obesity Control Center. Everyone speaks English and the clinic is very clean. I had one overnight nurse who didn't speak English well, but we managed with my limited Spanish and her limited English. Feel free to PM me with any questions. Best of luck with your decision!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
