I was approved for the full liquid tomorrow.... Started today couldn't really wait but I feel fine. I freaking miss food. I feel like I'm going through withdrawals from food. Geez does it get better???? I would love some chicken wings right now. I feel like I'm going crazy over here. Please tell me I'm not the only one with this incravable crave

I think pretty much ALL of us went through that. I would smell someone's lunch cooking or see a commercial for pizza or Red Lobster or something and I wanted it SO BADLY. Even though I knew that if I actually tried to eat any of that crap, I would be horribly ill and possibly do myself real harm. The head hunger is a big issue in the early days. It DOES get better. Eventually your brain will catch on. Plus, once you are on to more satisfying food stages, you can kind of trick yourself. Like once I was in my pureed/soft food phase, I made myself Shelly's Baked Ricotta (Google it for that and other great puree recipes!) and that almost was like eating REAL food!

Just hang in there. I promise you that it does get easier and eventually you'll be able to eat all your old favorite foods (though you may not want to anymore by that point).

You are not alone, believe me! I had my surgery on 5/18 so this is my third week. I've been craving solid food too! It does get better. I never thought starting on pureed food this week would be so good! For example, I never really liked fat free refried Beans before but now it's the most amazing thing and it has really helped me with missing solid food, like chicken etc...Hang in there, it will get better :) The thing that really helped me was keeping busy, so I wasn't focused so much but that was challenging at times being off of work. Let's just say, I watched a lot of TV and movies! I won't lie though, I still had some "food" dreams but they have pretty much subsided. Hope this helps.

I am 51/2 weeks post op and cleared for anyting I can handle. It does get better I promise you. I can eat anything and it does not bother me. With that said, I can only eat a few bites of some food but it sure is good. It will not be what you think it will be, so be patient. You will feel "full" after a few bites LOL.

This should read "I would love "a" chicken wing right now" because I bet that is all you will be able to eat at first LOL

It blows for sure. The post about just eating a chicken wing instead of wings is dead on lol. Sometimes I can eat 2 but not much more.

It'll get much better a few months down the road. It seems like forever now but I promise it's not. There will be a day when you get that chicken wing in your hand and it'll be the best thing ever.

I don't think the urge to eat food ever really goes away. When you get past this part of the ordeal you will eat in a new way, but you'll feel lots better just being able to eat some real food. Then you will get full after a few bites and wish you could eat more. It's a vicious cycle.

You just kind of reach a level of acceptance with your new lifestyle and make the best of it. Its a hard adjustment and oh how I wish that all of us were born with the type of metabolism that allows some people to eat all they want and not get fat. There have been times that I've seen people eating a lot of food and I wished I was doing the same. Then I secretly hoped they would choke on all that food that I couldn't have.

It's worth it. You'll make it through and move on with your new life. And you will look so good that all the big eaters will hide their faces in shame because you outshine them in every way. Then you can go home and smile to yourself while you are eating that one chicken wing:)

You are not alone. Seriously, on the way home from the hospital I was looking out the car window and spied a KFC. "Hmmmm, chicken...that sounds so good," was what I thought. I could almost taste it! Ridiculous, here I was in a car with a pillow pressed to my abdomen and afraid we'd hit a big bump and thinking about fried chicken!

It does get better! Head hunger was my worst enemy at that time. Once I went to soft food list, all was right with the world. I could probably try new things and more solids in a week or two, but I'm happy where I'm at. I'm losing a little, and I eat enough soft foods for my belly. I can eat about an egg, then I'm done. Persevere! You can do it!!!

I'm 3 weeks and cleared for mushies which I started after about a week anyway (a little) I was full liquid at 2 days post op and only clear on day 1. Kinda strange how many different plans are around for the same procedure. I don't suggest you go against ur surgeons orders but maybe see other plans and play around with your comfort level. Mine says I can swallow my horsey Calcium pills buy I'm afraid to. I Shld give it a try I suppose bit i# all the food that enders my mouth has to be a mushy consistency, I have a hard time wrapping my mind around the pill. Cottage cheese was on my full liquid list and it helps to feel like your eating. Give it a shot

@@Squizzo the reason you can swallow a pill but have to chew your food is because the part of our stomach that was removed did the grinding up of our food. The pill will dissolve in your stomach. I can take pills whole and I am 3 weeks out today. :)

@@Squizzo I had no trouble with large pills when I was cleared for them at 7 days post-op.

You're right about every place being a little different. I'm on chewables or cutting meds in pieces for 6 weeks! Not interested in trying to swallow one of those big things so that's fine with me. I just cut them into two or three pieces.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
