Has anyone experienced severe bad breath since your surgery? I brush my teeth 3-4 times a day, floss, & use mouthwash but I have a horrible taste & smell. Any solutions appreciated!

I have read a little about keotosis which I believe is something that happens when you lose weight but I have not had this issue. Bad breath has lee to do with the cleanliness of your mouth and more to do with what is in your stomach. Could be that foods you are eating are causing this.

Yup, ketosis give you bad breath. I carry a roll of breath mints with me everywhere, and gargle with mouthwash several times a day. Also, drinking fluids helps makes your mouth feel a little less toxic. I've asked my wife to let me know wneh she notices my breath getting funky. Yeah it's unfortunate, but the corresponding weight loss is SO worth it! So I just think of stinky breath as yet another NSV (non-scale victory). :P

Here is a link to an article from Live Science. 80% of fat loss is exhaled through your lungs so that is part of the reason for bad breath during weight loss. So breath out those fat cells!!

What a fascinating article, @@maggie409! It would be nice to see independent corroboration of their findings, but it's certainly intriguing.

Have you had any trouble with acid reflux or are you taking anything for it? Ketoacidosis (typically not always) causes a "fruity" smell to the breath, caution in those who are diabetic! ????. Maybe reflux could be harboring an issue? Usually can cause a sour or bitter taste in your mouth especially when waking up. Not for positive, but just an idea... Hope this helps. ☺️

I have the same thing- I'm attributing it to ketosis.

Do you have a white layer on your tongue? If so, it could be thrush and that would explain the terrible breath and terrible taste.

I developed thrush and I'm 8 days post op!

My nutritionist recommended drinking 2-3 8oz. glasses of apple juice to take care of the ketosis, which gives you that metallic taste in your mouth and bad breath.

Careful! My program says to stay away from fruit juices, pretty much forever. They are considered "empty calories", just like ice cream. That is, liquid calories that pass right through your stomach without filling you up, but can slow down your weight loss. You might want to double-check the instructions given to you by your bariatric surgeon.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
