Water consumption post-op

Hey everyone I was just wondering what everyone's Water consumption was the first few days after surgery? I've been sipping on Water all day but only got down about a half a bottle 8 floz. I can't really feel my new stomach yet and am worried about taking in too much water at one time in addition to the 40g of Protein goal my RD gave me.

I'm three days post-op and I'm grumbling and struggling hard with getting in fluids, much less the Protein that my nutritionist said I needed. I've managed about 20 grams over the last two days (the shakes are so hard to take in), and the fluids make me feel so full I could burst, even when sipped slowly. I managed 16 ounces of Fluid on day 1, 25 on day 2, and today I hit a very full 35 ounces. I'm going to try and stretch that out to 48 tomorrow, with at least half of my ounces as Protein, but I know it's an uphill climb so long as all I have are the shakes that I do. They're just too thick. I might have to see how quick I can get my hands on some Syntrax nectar, as that's been recommended a bunch as a thinner option.

I'm still pre-op but I can say that you must stay hydrated! 4 to 8 ounces in a day is not enough. If you can't manage to consume more you need to talk with your doctor. Mine says I should be drinking a minimum of 40 ounces post-op and preferably 64 or more ounces per day.

You need to sip more often, or bigger sips, if you are sipping all day and only drinking 4 oz of Water. Water empties much faster than food, and would come back up before it had enough pressure to stretch your sleeve. Even with post-op swelling you can work towards an ounce or two every 15 minutes. A lot of people like sugar-free popsicles as an aid to getting extra fluids.

Hang in there it gets easier. It is very difficult to keep hydrated immediately post op. I poured my fluids in a medicine cup and it took me three tiny sips to finish one medicine cup. Then I would refill it and start again. Sipping all day long.

You could try experimenting with different temperatures of fluids and also different kinds of flavored water, etc. Some fluids seemed to go down easier for me. It was about finding the right Fluid and the right temp.

As your stomach heals you will find it gets easier.

@Dischord The Syntrax Nectars fruit flavors are even better mixed with Water, and lose that thick heavy feeling. I found them much much easier to drink than the Chocolate/vanilla ones mixed with milk or RTD. I can still barely tolerate the ready-to-drink, unless it is all that is available.

Directly post op the ability to consume liquid quickly simply isn't there... I'm 6months now and Water has been one of the hardest things for me to consume. I could handle Protein drinks, watered down juices, g2, and a variety of other liquids and found each time I attempted plain Water I would have a wave of uncomfortable nausea :( I learned to mix juice with water and then finally this month I have been able to sip just regular h2o! As we are all different your ability to get in liquid will grow as your tummy heals.. Put yourself on a sip schedule :). I learned directly post op my sleeve would welcome slightly warmed tea and it seemed to relax a bit. However the cold would cause spasms and discomfort. Slow and steady. Even now I find I have yet to find the happy middle where I have good liquid and food consumption within the same day. Somedays I do well sipping and have poor food consumption and other days I eat well and have low liquid consumption. I'm still working to find the happy middle ground.

All good things come in time... Slow and steady will win :) happy sip sip sipping

I could only drink a few ounces the first couple days. My surgeon told me if I don't drink then to just suck on 2 tiny ice chips at a time constantly. My husband ran out and bought a bag of sonic ice that was my saving grace.

Waiting eagerly for my nectar to get here so I can get in some real Protein. I've started in on Vitamin Water Zero, though, and already I can take in more sips per hour than I could with plain Water. I know some people have said they prefer warm drinks, but I've had issues with warm beverages as opposed to cold ones - the cold ones liquids seem to go down much better.

I've also been doing crushed ice chips when I can't handle sipping, and my sleeve definitely likes those more than just liquids right now.

I feel like a freak of nature. My surgery was 4 days ago, and by day 3 I could already consume over 64 oz. of fluids.

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
