How many of you continue the shakes in your diet after many months after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm 16 months out, 10 pounds below goal and have had a Protein smoothie (24-32oz fluid/30-40g protein) every day. I also usually have a Quest bar at some point during the day. Knowing I've already gotten 50-60g protein, I am free to eat more veggies, fruit and whole grains instead of only protein for every meal/snack. But I still do eat a lot of protein foods, so I'm likely getting 80-100g protein daily. I feel a healthy, balanced diet is the key to long term success, both nutritionally and mentally. And I never bothered counting calories or carbs.

Same here, I look forward to my morning shake. I didn't lose my sweet tooth. It lasts most of the morning too because I add a lot of ice.

Not being a morning person either, it helps get me out the door faster ;-)

I stopped for a while but I drink on in the morning then for my mid morning snack I eat a P3 which has 14gms of Protein so before lunch I have 40 + grams of protein.

I am almost 2 years post-op and I drink 2-4 shakes a day. However, I am into lifting weights and building muscle mass in order to achieve a toned look, avoiding the look of loose and wobbly skin. Mass building requires a lot of Protein (1 gram per pound) at crucial times throughout the day. I have one first thing in the morning and one before bed. On my weight lifting days I have two extra shakes: one shake an hour before my weight lifting session and another shake within the first half hour post my workout session.

10 months out, and I have a Premier Protein chocolate shake every single morning. It jump starts my day with 30 grams of Protein, one-third of the way to my daily goal. "And it's so tasty too!" (Just like Vitameatavegamin, for those of you old enough to remember THAT one!)

I had my shake this morning before going to the gym and it has 35 grams of Protein in it. I feel better knowing that getting my protein will be less challenging. Now, it will be easier getting Proteins from other sources.

My surgery is scheduled for May 27th and my doctors diet guidelines post op only allow me to have Protein Shakes for the first 3 weeks and then he doesn't allow them anymore.

@@RNYGal But you won't be able to eat enough after just 3 weeks to get in 60-80 grams of Protein. Or does he not have a specific Protein requirement?

@@TammyDTM, no he doesn't have a specific Protein requirement. He just has guidelines of what you can eat and when and to stop the shakes at week 3. I'll have to clarify that he has no protein requirement. The post op diet sheet he gives out has no specific numbers on it except for how many ounces of Fluid he wants me to have a day.

@@RNYGal Is there a nutritionist at his office you can speak with?

@@TammyDTM, yes. I just had my consult with her the day after I scheduled my surgery and she just went over what was on the handout sheet. She just said how many grams of Protein the shakes should have and she also emphasized I stop the Protein Shakes at 3 weeks... It's strange they don't do protein shakes because all I see on here is people talking about protein and their shakes.

I have continued to have a shake for Breakfast every morning. I drink it on the way into work. I find this to be the easiest thing for me to kick start the morning and get the Protein I need.

I'm just past 3 months out and have a Premier Protein shake in the morning on work days. I know it's not the recommended process but i do drink slowly over the course of the morning. Sometimes I still have a bit left at lunchtime. I don't love them, don't hate them. They're just an easy way to get a big Protein influx first thing.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
