Ways to switch up the pre op diet!

Recommended Posts

So I am on day 4 of my pre op liquid diet, and so far so good. I am allowed 3 Protein Shakes a day, broth, SF jello(which I hate) and two 100 calorie yogurts a day. I have been eating everything but the Jello and I am so sick of broth!!!!! If I drink another cup of broth I might puke!

Just want to know if anyone had any ideas on something I can add to my broth to give it a different taste?

Really desperate and in need of help!!!

Ugh, I'm so jealous you get to have broth and yogurt!! I can only have 4 or 5 Protein Shakes and only one can be made with milk, the rest has to be made with water! We can have some SF Jello and SF Popsicles but I've just been sticking with shakes. Good luck finding some good tasting broth!!

Swanson flavor infused broths come in Chinese Hot and Sour, Mexican Tortilla, Ginger Thai, Cajun and Tuscan chicken flavors. I also made French onion Soup, minus the cheese and bread. I was allowed greens and some other veggies on my preop, so I added spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, etc to my broths for more flavor. I also added unflavored Protein Powder to my broths both pre and postop. Unjury made a Protein cheese powder that was killer mixed with the Mexican tortilla infused broth. You can also experiment with different herbs to liven up the "regular" beef, chicken and veggie broths.

How is anyone losing weight drinking these high sodium broths?! I looooove my salt but have had to give it up. Only no salt or 50% less salt broth for me

Although sodium has its own pros and cons and health-related issues, it has no affect on true weight loss.... Meaning actual body fat. It only affects Water retention/water weight. I ate these on my pre and postop diets and actually still eat them. Lost 114% of my excess weight, maintained for over 7 months and lowered my BP to 106/68 without paying any attention to sodium.

@@Kindle omg those broths sound AMAZING!!! But are they fat free and reduced sodium??? I would kill for some veggies or a salad at least for one meal!

I have the Unjury unflavored and the chicken soup flavored broth which I add at least once a day! I was trying to order the cheese sauce but they aren't selling it this year!! What a bummer!!!

@@kellmark I'm sorry! I chose to do the powder shakes instead of the complete "Optifast" and they said three shakes with 2 100 calorie yogurts a day. After tasting that powdered shake (Strawberry Bariatric Advantage) I was like oh no I can't keep doing this! So I called the office and my surgeons MA told me o could have Premier Protein (which I love) and anything on the Clear Liquids diet plus two yogurts a day! If I were you I'd call them just to check, because if I never called I would never know

I'm on the preop liquids now. My surgery is in 5 days. I purchased different RAMEN flavors and fed the noodles to birds. At $0.10 per pkg, you can't beat the price, and many flavors to choose from.

The broths have 0-1g fat, 25-30 calories/cup and 800g sodium. But unless you have to limit sodium for other health reasons, it does not affect weight loss at all. That's just a misconception. It would only affect Water weight and that fluctuates daily anyways.

I am jealous of everyone that gets yogurt, I would kill for one right now. I am on strict liquids which includes Protein drinks, sugar free jellos, and sugar free popsicles. I was watching youtube and found a hint from someone - they took Soups (I use French Onion and Chickenderia) and strained all the solids out. I hate the taste of bland chicken and beef broth but these taste good. I currently have Chickenderia going in my little crockpot (holds 2 cups) with some added cilantro.

oh maybe I will call then. I am 3-4 Protein Shakes a day, clear broth, I tried the thai one yesterday and it was so spicy, that I may do a splash of it in the chicken. I can do the sugar free popsicles, they were gross, the Jello is eh, but it is not a shake or broth - LOL. I have been adding Metamucil for Fiber too, and that helps feel full. I ate a no sugar added 40 calorie fudgsicle last night. It was good, which leads me to believe although it is on the full liquid diet list, post op, I cannot eat it now. ONLY 6.5 MORE DAYS!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
