Post op pain?

Recommended Posts

How long before the pain subsides? I RNY on Fri 2/13. Been taking pain meds every 4-6 hrs but still can barely get around.

It should start to fade soon. The first 2-3 days can be really harsh but it will get better pretty quickly. I recall setting my phone's timer to chime after 5 minutes of walking up and down the hallway of my house. For the first couple of days, 5 minutes was pretty taxing. Getting in and out of bed was difficult, and I don't have a recliner or anything else to sleep in.

I took pain meds pretty consistently around the clock for the first 4-5 days, and then 1-2 times a day for another week or two. I was even taking a dose here and there up to 4 weeks out. I know there are some folks here who never had much pain, never took anything harder than Tylenol through their recovery, but I was not one of them.

I know that everyone says this, but walking baby steps around the house, drinking Water until you think you're going to grow gills and swim away, and getting your Protein through any means necessary, will all make your recovery that much smoother.

Good luck, and welcome to your new world!

Two weeks out and I was still on pain meds every 4-6 hours. I stopped taking pain meds about 2 1/2 weeks out because the doctor made me. I was still in a lot of pain. It took up to 4 weeks to subside.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

I'm one week post op and, as of yesterday, I only need pain meds right before bed. Feeling pretty good at this point but some positions bother me such as hunching over to do the dishes. I'm slow at walking and still have some swelling. Hoping to be 100% by next week. Now to get rid of this cold...

I'm glad you posted this, I am having the same concerns! I am three days post op and still in a fair amount of pain! Also I can hear and feel things moving around in my bowels... Like the Water I'm drinking... I was so hoping I would be more like the other people who have had little pain but this pain sucks!

I'm now on day 9... the staples came out yesterday (at my insistence.. they wanted to wait another week) and it made a huge difference. Now only mild pain getting in out of bed or bending over. Dr said I'm dehydrated and if I can increase my fluids then I'll start to feel even better so that's my goal.

I haven't been on pain meds since the day after surgery. Surgery March 3, meds (morphine) March 4, nothing since...I think I am doing well...no pain, no nausea, hopefully it stays this way...

I think each person reacts differently...or at least our bodies react differently to surgery..

I how many days did everyone miss from work? I am having my procedure sooner than I thought and need to know what kind of time off I should ask for.

12 hour shifts were long at first I was exhausted at the end of my shifts. Took me probably another month to get my stamina built back up. I am 5 1/2-months post op down 107 pounds & I feel awesome.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
