Hard Time Getting Fluids Down

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I am almost 3 days post-op. The gas in my body is terribly uncomfortable but I'm walking every 2 hours for 10-15 minutes. My problem is I'm having a really hard time getting fluids down. Even with the tiniest sip the worst/most painful air bubbles come back up. Last night it was almost uncontrollable and I ended up dry heaving which was one of the most painful experiences of my life. And I sip as slowly as possible. My question is should that get better once the gas is gone? I assume so but I guess I just need some reassurance. This first 24 hours home has been miserable and I'm starting to have the 'maybe this was a mistake' thoughts.

Yeah, that is normal. It will go away in a couple of days. When your gas finally leaves ( A couple of big farts or burps, not kidding) you will feel much better. The issue with liquids is normal. Your esophagus is the size of a pencil right now due to all the swelling. So it will be hard but keep sipping. You may even burp like or feel like burping like a trucker. lol

But not to worry, it will get better. I went through the exact same thing and thoughts. We all have them. I am on my 4th week and okay with liquids now, but struggling with solids. Takes 6-8 wks for the swelling to go down. So hang on tight and find some patience. It won't always be like that. This is the hump we all go over. ;)

P.S. Don't trust a fart.

Try some Infant Mylicon /Simethicone drops. Wal-Mart/Amazon And Gas X Strips, It also helps to keep a pillow against your belly. When it is less tender lay on your stomach it will also force gas out. I also had a much easier time drinking when it had crushed ice in it for some reason. Good Luck!!!!

Gonna be honest with you, I struggled with gas (from surgery) for about a week. However, it took about 2.5 weeks for me to be able to drink normally without burping/taking in air when sipping. Every sip I took for the first 2.5 weeks caused me major discomfort and some pain. Doctor said it was gas, totally normal, and one day I woke up and it was gone. I'm 2.5 months out now, 60 lbs down. Keep pushing forward ????

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
