Hi everyone. My name is Ashlee, I am 27 and I'm a pre-op candidate for gastric bypass. I live in San Diego, CA (and have all my life!) and my surgeon is Dr. Julie Ellner. I'm very new to the process and I don't personally know anybody who has had weight loss surgery so I'm looking forward to meeting others who are walking this path with me.

I'm especially interested in talking to other young ladies close to my age (20s-early 30s) who have had any weight loss surgery. I recently attended a support group and found that there was nobody there close to my age and somebody 55 isn't going to have the same emotional and social struggles that someone 27 is (no offense if you're 55 but I bet your friends don't wanna go out drinking with you every Friday).

Looking forward to meeting folks and gaining much needed support! post-246023-14226379534126_thumb.jpg

@@blashlee Hi there and welcome to the rest of your life! WLS has been both a blessing a somewhat of a curse for me at times. But the best thing I've learned in this is that I am much stronger than I ever imagined. If you need a friend, I'm here! Cute pup too. I have some Maltese that I just adore.

Hey doll! I am 22 here. Currently residing in Indiana. Welcome! I'm kind of new Here also. Just had surgery January 13. So I'm pretty fresh off the boat. This is truly a life changing journey and it can be a positive journey if you follow the doctors orders. You'll get to meet some pretty amazing ppl and your eyes will open to many things you never thought before. You will have your ups and downs. But hopefully more ups. I just had my down today when I went through a terrible two hr dumping syndrome session. But afterwards you feel better and you learn lessons. I'm two weeks and three days out and I've already lost 27 pounds. This can be a blessing if you remain strong

Welcome! You'll find varied age ranges here. I went to a support group in November and there was no one under 40 there. I'm 32 and scheduled for surgery March 12th. If you have questions or want to chat, let me know. I've been through the initial consultation, 5 months of the 6 month supervised diet ( required by my insurance), psych eval and re-consultation so far. I have appointments every week until my surgery date. It's a challenging process but I'm looking forward to the day.

Thank you Meryl! My insurance doesn't require the 6 month diet but I am on a liver shrinking diet prescribed by my surgeon. If all goes well we are looking at possibly the end of March for surgery.

Hi @@blashlee! I'm Lauren. I live in San Diego and Dr. Julie Ellner is my bariatric surgeon too. Like you, I'm also a native San Diegan. I'm 37, so I don't exactly fit into the age group you were looking for, but I'm close! ;-)

My first consultation with Dr. Ellner was on February 20. I was not required by my insurance to do a 6 month supervised diet, but I've been on Dr. Ellner's liver shrinking diet since 2/20. Currently I'm STARVING! I've completed all but one of my pre-op required appointments and I'm hoping to get a surgery date at my next appointment with Dr. Ellner on 3/19.

I'm planning on going to the next support group meeting, so hopefully I will meet you there!

You're closer to my age than the people I met before, and actually pretty close to age range of people I normally socialize with anyway! i would love to meet you at the next support group :) I got my date at my 2nd appointment and it was confirmed two weeks later. I'm seeing her again on 03/18, we will have just missed each other. I really am glad I have found Dr. Ellner, she's great and so is Dawn, they always get back to me right away when I have questions and I always feel comfortable and at ease with her. My surgery is April 6th, we are getting things underway. It's exciting but also terrifying all at once.

Hi @@blashlee! I'm so glad to hear that you got your surgery date at your second appointment! I really wasn't ready for surgery at my 1st appointment, but I definitely am now. I'm getting anxious and I just want to get my surgery scheduled! I agree, this is both exciting and terrifying, but I'm ready to get it done and get on with my life!

I really like Dr. Ellner and Dawn too. When I first began looking at local bariatric surgeons, I was immediately impressed with Dr. Ellner by her website alone. She seemed so open, friendly, caring and willing to provide as much information as she possibly could. Once I went to one of Dr. Ellner's seminars, I knew that she was the right surgeon for me. I had to change my insurance in order to go to her, but I'm glad I did. I am confident that I will have a successful surgery and follow-up experience with Dr. Ellner.

I look forward to meeting you at the support group on 3/25! :)

I changed my insurance to see her as well and I'm really glad I did. My previous insurance had a lot of hoop jumping and it was about to go up on cost anyway. Things shook out really well, I'm 23 days away. A little freaked out but I mentally feel pretty ready and have a great support team in my family and friends.

@@blashlee hi I'm 27 and I had gastric bypass yesterday and i am still in the hospital right now. ...Besides the pain I have walked yesterday and today.... they also found a Hernia and repaired it as well so my pain experience is so much like labor pains if you have a child you would know what I mean ●_● omg but I have no problems so far....other than being morbidly obese I am a healthy 27 year old...i think I worried so much about the day of surgery and all of the horror stories that it's really was not that bad...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
