Worst "compliment" you have gotten since surgery

Recommended Posts

I just read through allllll of these and they were hysterical!

I just finished my six month diet doc and I'm approved and waiting to schedule my sleeve.

For the last six months I've been eating healthy at work, and I've been going walking and trying to prepare and portion and not eat and drink together etc. I've lost about 30lbs.

I work in an office with about 20 others..and most of us are in our 20's. Everyone likes to go out for drinks and we often get fast good because it's a 24/7 agency.

A coworker was going to go out for Wendy's and everyone was making their lists of what they wanted. Someone asked me what I wanted and before I could say "no, thank you," another girl WHO IS TINY TINY TINY spoke for me and said something along the lines of "she's been eating rabbit food for the last month--I don't think she wants anything." Granted, she was being funny/joking, and we have a great work relationship, in my opinion.

But WHAT?

Annnnnddd why is this tiny little princess snot paying attention to my carrot sticks anyways!!?

I politely said my food was in the fridge and that I was okay, thanked them anyway.

I'm NEVER speechless and in that moment I literally had no words. My mouth probably dropped.

And this and precisely this is why I'm not telling a soul at work about my surgery.

"I don't keep toxic people in my life who think they are "keeping it real" by being rude."

I totally agree. I think there is a segment of the population who use "keeping it real" as an excuse to be rude, mean, bi***y a**holes. There is a way that you can tell someone things that aren't so nice without being mean spirited and hurting the other person's feelings. Yes, this is a soapbox for me. /end rant

"Are you crazy? I could never do that. I'd rather do it on my own" ~ my very overweight stepsister who has never really dieted.

Wow, I have been insulted about my weight SO many times. Here are just a few from the top of my head:

1) After dress shopping and feeling depressed, I asked my then boyfriend at the time if he thought I was fat. He said "well, if I didn't know you and I was describing you to someone, I would describe you as fat."

2) My aunt came to visit from Colorado and commented "You are very pretty but no man will ever love you as long as you are fat. You have to lose weight."

3) Another ex-boyfriend said "your weight is acceptable." I sounded worse when I thought about it.

4) Same ex-boyfriend also was commenting on his friend's wife being obese and commented "she's fatter than you."

5) Again, same ex (notice ex..lol) and I were having a conversation about how much better my body was back in my early 20's when he commented, as an alleged joke: "Look what I am left with now."

6) I had an uncle tell me "next time you come and visit us, we want to see you look beautiful."

7) Once I had lost weight and my friend told me "wow, that dress looks great, if you had worn that before your stomach would have been all over the place."

8) Same friend also commented that her aunt mentioned how fat I had gotten.

10) Parents friend told me I needed to lose weight, actually several parents friends have said the same very thing.

11) I had a friend ask me my weight (she is also heavy) and when I told her she said "wow, that's a lot."

12) My mothers friend randomly ran into each other at the mall. I hadn't seen him in several years so when my mom said: "Do you remember my daughter?" he commented "I do and I remember she use to be much thinner."

13) My dad would continuous ask me: "Don't you want to be presentable?" or "Don't you want to look good?"

14) There was this waiter I had a crush on at this cafe my family and I would go to. My uncle noticed us flirting and said "he would never like you, you are too big." Then my father agreed.

15) My father made a nasty comment about my weight in front of another aunt who I don't get along with. I block that one out, but I know it was definitely snarky.

WOW! I can't believe how many horrible comments have been made in the name of "helping me." Apparently, people still think they can shame you into a healthier lifestyle. Sorry, doesn't work.

I don't really think people are out to be malicious with their comments. I do think that sometimes stuff comes out of people's mouths before they think as well. I have been called "prosperous" (which in Asia means rich and can afford to be obese.) a man of "substance", and a close friend once said I have a big engine. None of which I took to be bad things but generally they all meant fat. Am waiting to see what happens when I am post op in mid April which I've only shared with two people. (One who has had it done. The other who was/is considering it.) I am waiting to see/hear the comments about my clothes no longer fitting (lucky I have some stuff I've grown out of up to now.)

My husbands Aunt asked if we would be getting married again so i could wear a slinky dress and get pictures retaken. He curtly explained that he felt i was beautiful at our wedding and we wouldnt change a thing. We were married about a year prior to getting my surgery. I needed his insurance post wedding for coverage. Now down 150 lbs., a year and 5 months out of surgery and 3 months pregnant. My biggest pet peeve is people thinking it's okay to talk about how fat i was like i'm not the same human being.

Also totally forgot my most recent one. My mom has always been nasty to me about my weight. I was fat since i was about 12. She never gave me positive attention or bought me anything. After losing weight she started buying me lots of clothes because she is "so proud of me" i had to ask her to stop because she was spending too much money on me. Her reply is that she wants to and is happy to do it because she "refused" to buy me clothes when i was a "certain size" and that she "couldn't bring herself to do it". Meanwhile i've always been overweight despite constant efforts with diet and exercise. I no longer feel bad about her spending money on me. Lol Silver lining, she acknowledged my suspicions over the years that she was treating me like that my whole life maliciously and on purpose.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
