Are you losing "Friends" now that you are losing weight?

Someone you think of as a "good friend" is someone you thought for all intents and purposes they would be supportive and that they would genuinely be happy for you as you get smaller and healthier. The sad truth is many of us will lose good friends because they might think we have changed so much that it messes with the dynamic of the friendship. They become jealous or uncomfortable with the new us.

Has this happened to you?

My best friend of many years is so competitive that she is grinding her teeth that i did the surgery..i was always smaller than her until the last 10 year's..now that I'm losing she's freaked..honestly i have few friends these days..these groups help so much...

I have had nothing but positive experiences from good friends and even casual acquaintances. I try to be careful about how much I talk about the surgery with them. Of course it seems to have been a huge focus in my life for the past 5 months so I try to be sure I shut up about how happy I feel and try to not give a pound by pound replay of weight lost. And I make extra effort to listen to them and really let them lead the conversation.

I have really been blessed to have nothing but support from everyone who knows.

Im extremely grateful that ive had nothing but support before , during, and after WLS. I've been told that Im even more outgoing than I was before WLS, and will speak up more and put myself out there in a group situation. I think my self esteem went through the roof , but Im still very understanding and aware of being supporive of others weight struggles. Momma D, many years ago I had a "frenemy" just like your best friend I was a normal weight then , she was maybe 25 lbs overweight, but she couldn't STAND IT that I was smaller. Instead of her focusing on her positive points , all she could focus on was my smaller size ! And, ohhhhh the constant put downs that came out of her mouth ! Much like your friend, she was immature, insecure and unwilling to do anything but put me down to feel better about herself. Sad but true. Needless to say, I left her at her own Pity Party and moved on. Hopefully you'll see your own self worth and move on too. Sending you hugs and support !!!!!

I'm the same person I've always been. So are my friends. We don't like each other because of how we look. I learned how to spot fake friends a long time ago so the ones I've got are the real deal. The others aren't worth my time, no matter what size I am (or was).

I have a friend who every time we get together she makes some kind of dig regarding my weight loss and I've been holding it in for quite some time, but I'm at the point that I need to bring it up or not be around her anymore. I do not want to be around negativity.

I think you will feel much better when you confront the issue or remove yourself from the negativity. Either way, it's a win win for you. here's to healthier relationships! ????

Mlogsdon09, if she doesn't stop making digs at you after you've talked to her, try matching her attitude. If she says nothing about your weight loss, say nothing about it too. If she says something nice and supportive, say something back in kind. If she says something negitive or demeaning, reply with a dig of your own. I know this sounds juvenile, but you'd be surprised at the results you get. Not only do people hear what they sound like, but they definitely don't like getting a taste of their own medicine !! Good luck, you got this !!

Like the saying goes:

"As you we grow up, we realize it's less important to have a ton of friends, and more important to have REAL ones"

Weed out the ones who are negative and keep the ones you know are truly happy and supportive of you. Simple as that. It has made my life happier and drama free :)

All my freinds and family have been cool and supportive about it, the only issue is those that don't know much about WLS and think it's is the easy way out, have spent many times explaining that it was not easy and it is a tool for weight loss, not a magic bullet

I have a really small circle of friends, and they're all people I've been close with FOREVER. I don't expect too many changes, but I'm making an effort not to drive them crazy and to pay attention to what's happening in their lives too. This is such a big deal for us it can be easy to get lost in it.

Thank you all for your responses. Here's the thing. I don't talk about my surgery or weight loss to anyone unless they ask. I am very proud of my accomplishment, but I just keep that in my own thoughts. When I get together with my friends, I always make sure to ask them questions first about what's going on in their life, how are things, etc. and even when I answer questions asked about my weight loss, I keep the answers to a minimum and don't answer in what can be construed as bragging. But it still seems like I am regarded with jealousy and unfortunately I can't help the way they feel. I am happy I made this decision and I am very proud of myself. If I have to keep it inside, so be it!

Hi I have lost friends because of my weight lost but they were not true friends, I have met new friends at the gym and I am loving the new me, I am not going to apologize to anyone for me wanting to be healthy and finally doing what it takes to get there, this has been no far from a long journey but it has been worth it, all the hurdles and appointments and test were so well worth the results. I can now do things that I only dreamed about. I a m loving life again and the way I see it true friends accept you for you and want you to be happy not sick and unhealthy, so with that saying I am loosing the weight and dropping off dead weight people who mean me no good.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
