Grand Canyon bash in September 2005, anyone? Rafting, hiking, sipping margaritas (or lemonade) under the stars. . .

I've always wanted to do the Grand - I've even had friends who won a permit in the lottery and invited me to go along. I never could - being a single mom it was always too much time away from home. But now my 'baby' is driving and I have a great deal more free time.

I'm guessing you'd go with an outfitter - any idea how much that costs?

I'd love to go - if I can afford it.

Becky and Kim (and anyone else), I was thinking of going with OARS. Pretty expensive, as I recall from last year's catalog, but then I was thinking of making it a short trip (not one of the $3000 ones) in case my inner princess comes along and demands air conditioning and fluffy pillows after the first night in a tent!

Too funny!

I outfit river trips (canoes) and folks are always amazed at how much luxury we bring along. I always tell 'em, If we wanted to rough it - we'd backpack! The guides will laugh at you - but your fluffy pillow will fit inside a dry bag.

Your inner princess can be appeased.

A girl I worked with used to help her 2 brothers with their rafting concession in the canyon every summer. She loved it. I prefer backpacking, but it's all an adventure. Nowadays my adventures tend to have a little more plush to soothe the ol' body. ;)

I agree -- my idea of roughing it is spending a month at a luxurious Paris hotel without drinking wine! Still, I've always wanted to raft the Colorado. I spent two days in the Grand Canyon this June (pre-band) and was incredibly winded after a one-mile hike on the flat rim -- one of the reasons I opted for the surgery.

I'll check a couple of outfitters, and will start a new thread on the GC for anyone who's interested. I'm thinking mid-September 2005. (I'm in graduate school, and classes start around the 22nd.)

Ryan, you are a gifted writer; I find myself drawn into the imagery and I can feel the wind, the sun, the snow -- whatever it is you are writing about.

Your cycle will be fine resting for the winter. My husband had a Road King and was in a bad accident this spring. He is still healing and anxious to get another one as his was totalled. It is a glorious feeling that cannot be fully understood unless you too know the thrill. He has a boat too so we are fans of both.

I am so thrilled for you that your surgery is scheduled and it is soon your turn to start the great journey. You have been through alot to get to this point and I feel so excited for you.

Please keep us posted and inspired with your gifted writing. It will be exciting for you to ride next spring. You will most likely be needing a new leather jacket for sure!!!!

Best wishes to you,

Theresa Marie (I am scheduled for November 30 -- so we will banded in the same month-- really makes us family that way!!!)

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Theresa, tell your hubby to get to healin', spring's coming, and there's no longing like the ache to ride when the weather gets mild, and that special scent is on the wind.

Yep, we'll both be November Bandster babies. It's good to have family, and this family really cares. Unlike that other family. OOps! Did I say that?

Put my Harley away too, but I didn't clean her up, figured she'd get dusty anyway, (besides its hubbies job to keep that chrome shinning)..Good Luck

New date with Band...Dec 6, was supposed to be Nov 18 :D

HarleyNana,

Yes it is a bummer to get ready for something then have it pushed back, but the comfort of knowing an experienced MD will be with your doctor should outweigh the inconvenience, tho waiting is the hardest part for me so far. Your Doc should do several bands with the Proctor before striking out on his own, so it is a good thing.

It'll happen, and these wonderful people will be here for you through it all. Aren't they all great?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
