Calling all 20 somethings!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I'm new to bariatric pal but this site/app seems pretty helpful! I'm looking for some people close to my age (22) that I can either go through this journey with or just talk to who has already gone through this process. My parents are actually both sleevers themselves and are super helpful when I see them (I'm away at college), but it would be great to have someone to talk to about all this stuff that is closer to my own age.

A little about me health wise: I'm getting sleeved in December, I've got PCOS (which makes losing weight super difficult for me!) 5'7, SW 275 CW 260 GW 140-150.

Any takers? (:

Hey - im 26 and had my surgery done on Aug 20th. You can see my stats for weight. I also have PCOS. It is because of PCOS that I chose to have this done. I have hopes this will help manage my PCOS symptoms by loosing enough weight. Ask any questions you want.

Hi I am 25 and I am getting my sleeve on November 5. I have diabetes and PCOS also but my PCOS is not that bad. I would also love to have someone close to my age that I can talk about the surgery specially since my surgery is just around the corner

Can we add friends via the app? I know we can on the computer but I'm struggling with the app. I'm trying to add you both but I don't see an option? Newbie status.. Lol.

It's okay! Since it's not letting me see your stats, how much have you lost and how long has it taken you? Excess skin issues? How long did it take you to recover and get back to being active? How have you dealt with telling people if they ask what you've done to lose weight?

@ai1992

Here are my stats:

  • Gender: Female
  • Location: CALIFORNIA
  • Surgery: Gastric Sleeve
  • Surgeon: Allen Cortez
  • Surgery Date: Aug 2014
  • Height: 5 feet 8 inches
  • Starting Weight: 400 lbs
  • Weight Lost: 85 lbs
  • Current Weight: 315 lbs
  • Goal Weight: 150 lbs
  • BMI: 47.9

I had my surgery done on Aug 20, 2014 so its only been 2 months 5 days. Before surgery I lost 40lbs and since surgery I have lost 45lbs. So thats about 5 lbs a week. No excess skin issues yet. I lead a different lifestyle and am at home most days so my recovery is different then most peoples. For the first month I really didn't feel well and regretted it all the time. The second month was a little easier but every time I eat I get stomach pain and dont feel well. I go back to my surgeon this week so I will see what he has to say.

This has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. My jury is still out on if I think it was a good idea or not but if I can lose the weight and keep it off then I will know it was. Eating is very different these days and I really miss just being able to sit down to a meal and eat Protein, vegetables and fruit all at once. Some days I feel okay and others I feel really tired and weak. It just depends on the day.

I have had people ask me (like the lady at the place where I get my Protein shakes) if I had surgery and I have so far answered honestly. My family asks me all the time how my eating is going and it gets to be annoying sometimes because I get tired of dealing with it; let alone talking about it. I wish not a lot of people had known but I told someone and then it got all around to everyone who knows me so I just try to not bring a lot of attention to it. I have to say that everyone has been really encouraging though and nice about it.

If you have any other questions just ask.

I had the sleeve done when I was 22 myself in my last quarter of college. I honestly never regretted a thing and the people I met online were some of the most helpful I had through the process. I could only hope I can be there for others like they were there for me.

I'm 22 and getting the sleeve on December 11th I've told select family and friends. Most don't understand why I want to do this so it's difficult!

I'm 25 and considering getting sleeved- I just started the process and right now my only regret is that I didn't do it earlier. I also have PCOS and am really excited to get the ball rolling on this!

Hello! I'm 28 and I'm just now beginning the process to get a sleeve. I have a BMI of 44  I'm so excited to start this! I too wish I had done this sooner. I have PCO, am borderline diabetic and suffer from a chemical imbalance. I was too that my weight is the main reason I haven't gotten pregnant. I'm praying this will be the answer! I LOVE reading all of y'alls success stories. My main concern is exercise. I positively hate it. I guess it's because I sweat so badly and I'm so uncomfortable. How much do y'all exercise?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
