Hi my name is Lost1.

I started the Gastric Bypass journey only one month ago.

Things have moved rather quickly for me. Some would say I am lucky. I would say it's making me more nervous.

My insurance has put up no real fight. I didn't require a 6 month supervised weight loss /diet plan. Nor was I required to have a psychiatric assessment.

However, my doctor Ihor Fedorak required a assessment by a local counseling office and a ultra-sound for possible gallbladder issues.

In 4 short weeks, I have met with my NUT, a psychologist, a doctor who conducted my ultrasound, my own personal therapist for a referral letter and of course attended a 3 hour class.

Things are at a stand still now. My assessment results are being faxed over to my doctor in the next few days, my gallbladder has one big stone (1 1/2 inch) present so it will be removed during surgery. Everything else is in order. I have to have my co-pay amount at the time of surgery. Which is $350 dollars which again from reading all your stories I am very, very lucky.

My surgeon is running appointments into November and December. They're thinking my surgery will take place later next month. Around the 20th. I am very excited and yet very nervous. The 10 days before surgery eating barely nothing is going to make me feel very sick. I am diabetic and am not looking forward to that. But, I am on the cheery side and feel ready.

Thanks to everyone who post their stories and their questions on this site, this has been my "run to" site when I know I can't call my doctor @ 3:00 am. :) I appreciate your honesty and your experiences. They have been very helpful to me.

Hello, @lost. Congrats on your journey. This process is different for everyone as i read most post. I had to do classes for 3months one day a week. See a cardiologist, psychologist, psychiatrist, have a swallow evaluation, run several blood test, also a stool specimen amoung other things before i had my surgery 2months ago. I am also a diabetic. I was weak at times during my clear liquid diet. I ate regular yogurt, Jello, and popsicle a few times a day whenever my sugar started to get to low. But the Protein Shake that you should be drinking also should help. This surgery changes the need for the amount of insulin, if u are on insulin, you will need. I, myself no longer need insulin. Just remember to follow your dr and nut instructions. You will do well. I lost 44lbs in 7weeks. Started 239 August 5th,2015. 229August 12th day of surgery, now i am 195lbs????

@Lost1

Did you by any chance have symptoms with your gallbladder stone?

You are lucky that you can get surgery this quickly. I was told in Canada there's a 2 year wait list.

Hi Beni,

I do consider myself very, very lucky. I didn't know I was having symptoms until the doctor told me what my symptoms were. Like, when I lay on mm stomach it's almost like I can't breathe. Stuff like that. Do you have symptoms? I have very few but my gallstone is still there however. :/

See that's my problem I don't know if I have the right symptoms for gallbladder. My tummy hurts sometimes and I can't figure out why. That's why I asked what your symptoms were because what I researched doesn't match mine all the way

I burp like all the time. I only did that when I was pregnant which was kind of related to nausea. And I have bloating and kind of painful lower abdomen. Like I ate something that didn't agree with me. But it doesn't go away.

How long is the wait in Canada for a gallbladder ultrasound? I don't think (in my personal opinion) you should wait 2 years for that.. I lived in Upstate NY and they saw a lot of people from Canada at Strong Memorial Hospital.

I'm in Virginia. I was just relating what another post said. Perhaps I should get an ultrasound of the gallbladder. Better safe then sorry.

I believe Beni was saying there is a two waiting list for the weight lost surgery, not to check the gall bladder.

I think Beni was saying there is a waiting list in Canada. Not in VA. But, Beni thinks they should go get a gallbladder ultrasound.

Im sorry that wasnt how i was trying to get my point across. .lol...

I believe he was saying there is a two year waiting list to receive weight lost surgery, not a waiting list to check the gall bladder.

I know the program i was in checked all vital organs, small and large. Especially if you may have other medical issues.

Thank you for bring my incorrect text to my attention ☺

Hello

I know this post is old but my surgeon will be (hopefully) Dr. Fedorak. How was the approval process for you? It's been over 2 weeks since my 6 month doctor visit. How long did it take them to submit for approval? TIA!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
