Sudden stabbing pain in Chest, help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I need advise!

My surgery was on the 8th of September - 1.5 week ago.

I even had my checkup with the hospital nurse yesterday and all seems to be perfect, great healing, good weight loss, no pain.

Last night when I went to bed out of nowhere it seems I felt a sudden sharp stabbing pain in my right chest every time I try to pull in a breath.

I tried to kind of sit more upright in my bed because the pain breathing was not as bed and I managed to fall a sleep.

But it is only 1:50 am and I just woke up 20 min ago because of this pain .

Anybody any idea what this could be.

Otherwise I do not feel sick nor do I am dizzy or have a temperature or any other pain .

PLEASE help if any of you has an idea or experienced the same.

Thanks

Check with your doctor, but I hope it's nothing more than gas. Pretty common with most surgeries. I have had two surgeries in my abdomen and both times the stabbing pains in my chest, collar bone, and back were due to gas.

Yes but I am 1.5 weeks out and had not had any gas pain before the entire time. So why would it show up after 10 days?

I had surgery the 8th as well, and am experiencing the exact same thing! It's an awful sharp stabbing pain that feels like it's right under my right breast whenever I take anything more than a shallow breath, or I inhale suddenly. I know it's not gas because my gas pains were gone with in a few days after surgery. This popped up around Sunday.

I had my 1 week post op with my surgeon on Monday and mentioned it to him, and he brushed it off, attributing it to the trauma of a major surgery. It has gotten much worse today to the point I woke up sobbing trying to roll over to get out of bed this morning.

If it doesn't ease up, I'll probably just go into the ER tomorrow. I've been googling (the worst thing to do when you don't feel well, I know Lol) and I'm afraid it could be pleurisy or something of the like.

I hope you feel better and keep me updated if you find out what it could be and I'll do the same!

I hate to say this but I am glad there is somebody with the same symptoms. Believe me I do wish you would not feel this but not being alone in this helps.

I just decided to grab a handful of chewable baby anvils an hour ago and for the last about 20 minutes the pain has numbed away.

So I will try to get some more sleep and will keep you uptodate on this tomorrow. I wish you get some sleep too.

I totally agree, I thought I was the only one feeling this way and it's nice to not be alone. I just took a little dose of my pain meds and it should knock me out soon. Have a good rest!

Could it be heartburn? Are you on an antacid?

No it had nothing to do with hard burn because I have had horrific acid reflux with the band.

Last night after I took quite a few pain killers it took me until 5am this morning to fall asleep but when I woke up at 8 am it was like nothing had happened.

So I am now wondering maybe it was some kind of gas that was trapped somewhere and with the move I made when I laid down it moved to my right chest and caused that stabbing pain. So I really have no other explanation for it.

@ bebeandkoko I hope you got some rest last night after the meds too. !!

Go get your gallbladder checked ASAP. You need a liver function test (LFT - which is a blood test) at a bare minimum. If your liver enzymes come back elevated, insist upon an ultrasound. If you no longer have a gallbladder, do the obvious. Call your surgeon.

I felt like I was being stabbed in the left ribs, my doc told me that was where muscle had been sewn together under the skin.

Same this night woke up at 3 with stabbing pain in the same spot. My right chest into my breast and this time it was clearly accompanied by acid reflux pain. So now I am completely thrown off. This time I did not rake pain killers but ate a banana ( or 3 bites if it) and drank Water and the pain slowly went away.

Is that the new indication of acid reflux???????

And I will not take anti acid reflux meds because I do not believe in them. I will have to learn which foods trigger acid refux and will have to eat accordingly.

@@nowornever14, it sounds like you've already figured things out. Your declaration of not taking anti-reflux meds is your choice and it sounds like you're pretty set in stone about it.

Just so you are aware (in case you didn't know), there is such a thing as silent reflux( many people have this condition). You can go day and night never having a single symptom and serious damage is being done. Untreated reflux can cause Barretts Esophageal Cancer. Happens to plenty of folks.

I applaud you for wanting to figure out your sleeve, eat healthy, and avoid triggers that will intensify reflux. But just because it doesn't wake you up in the middle of the night doesn't mean it's not happening. Please ask your doctor about this at your next visit and good luck to you.

I had esophageal spasms post op. Stabbing pain in my chest that I felt in my mid back. Go to the ER and let the check just to be safe, which is what I did. In my case it was a Charlie horse in the muscles of my esophagus.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
