My insurance doesn't cover Bariatic "anything" (United Healthcare through Neighborhood). So, I have decided to go to TJ & self pay like some of you... However, deciding on what surgeon has been difficult! Please share your Dr. experiences, THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY, I want to hear it all, please!! This will help make my decision.

I used Dr Garcia on September 18. It was a positive experience but I do encourage you to get up and walk ASAP as all the doctors who chat with you suggest. The follow up from the doctor who does follow up care has been wonderful. The Marriott was a great place to recover. Hardest part is that I feel so well that you want to move along faster on the introduction of food. I also like that they gave good suggestions for Vitamins and supplements that will help will Hair loss etc. Good luck to all taking this big step.

Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Dr. Martinez performed my surgery at Obesity Control Center in TJ in December 2013. I had an easy recovery and am doing great almost 10 months postop. I can't say enough good things about my experience with them and the outstanding followup I've had even being hundreds of miles away. You can PM me if you'd like details about how and why I chose them. And you can check out hundreds of posts from a bunch of other OCC patients on the "Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Obesity Control Center" thread in the Self Pay and Mexico subforum.

for medical travelers who wish to stay in the U.S. for VSG surgery Dallas seems to be the best option if you need to fly to your surgeon. Cost of VSG in Dallas is half what it cost in the Northern part of the U.S. probably due to the competition Texas Bariatric surgeons face from their lower cost colleagues just across the border. Dr. NIcholson is the best option I was able to find in Dallas for an out of town vsg payment. His price is 12,200 for a vsg. I chose DR. Corvala at Hospital Angeles in TJ as I think that offers the best quality to price ratio but for those not comfortable with TJ or catching a lot of grief about going to Mexico like i am, Dallas and Dr.NIcholson are a viable high quality low cost alternative to TJ.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
