@@Luana526 dumping is mostly associated with having gastric bypass however, I have read that there is a form of dumping with the sleeve as well but, not as common though.

So I woke up this morning with a runny nose and sore throat! I'm at the "minute clinic" and may have to get antibiotics because orange juice, Soup and DayQuil is not working I even took a clarinex tablet! This is happening 10 days BEFORE my scheduled surgery :( what should I do? Has anyone gotten a cold before surgery? What's going to happen?

Well, they won't do surgery if you have a fever because that's an indication of infection. You should be fine with your symptoms, although I know it's a nuisance right now. Get well quickly!

Thank you @@Luana526!

I was prescribed a z-pack and nasal spray she said I should be fine

Tnl1031, I'm in Pa too, near Harrisburg. Are you nearby?

I'm outside of Boyertown, which is about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Harrisburg.

Day 8 of Clear liquids pre-op diet!!! Yay! Only 6 more till surgery on the 23rd. I am so excited I can hardly stand it. Can't wait...I'm totally looking forward to feeling differently about food. I can honestly say I was sick of food. I did eat normally until the two week pre-op began, but I can't say I really enjoyed all the things I ate before. I felt like my foods were habit. I don't want to be hungry all the time. The last diet I did was 5 years ago with a doctor and I took Phentermine. I was not hungry at all. Lost about 55 lbs. and was working out all the time. I did fine until I couldn't take the Phentermine anymore. Then I was hungry all the time again. At my first appointment with my surgeon my husband asked why this surgery was going to work for me when I have never been able to keep my weight off before. The doctor's simple answer was that some people, including me, are hungrier than others. My husband wasn't trying to be mean, he just didn't understand how this was going to work when nothing else has (he's fit and trim and very disciplined - never had any weight issues). I see this as my last chance. When I had to list all my diets on my initial paperwork, it was ridiculous. I didn't even try anymore on my own because I knew it wouldn't last longterm. So, if I don't want the foods I used to eat, GOOD!!! They got me here - taking blood pressure medicine, sleeping with a C-Pap attached to my face that I hate, along with about four other medications for miscellaneous health issues. I don't want this life anymore so whatever it takes I will do willingly. The two week pre-op prep has not been nearly as bad as I thought it would be and I am not permitted anything that resembles normal food. Only Clear Liquids, Jello, Protein shakes, Crystal Lite. Pretty restrictive but its only for 2 weeks. A much shorter time than it took me to get to 237 lbs.!!! We have a trip to Sarasota to visit our son, daughter-in-law and 5 month old baby grandson in November and I intend to have to buy a new bathing suit when I get there. I have started to buy smaller clothes and have a drawer in my dresser where I have them stashed. It helps me stay focused. I want to be around to play with my darling little grandson and I don't want to be the fat grandmother!!! I think maybe what I'm trying to say is that we have to keep in mind all the great things that wait for us after we lose weight and get healthier. We can all do this.

Wow, CPAronold! How interesting! I'm not on clear liquids at all. I have a Protein Shake in the a.m., fruit (only apple, orange, or pear) for mid-morning. salad with four ounces of Protein with two tablespoons of low cal dressing for lunch, fruit again mid-afternoon and then protein shake for dinner. I'm used to it and have mostly followed it. On the days when I'm very strict, I lost two pounds in one day! I, too, and getting excited! Eight more days!!

Also, I spoke to my doctor's office yesterday and asked if I would be following all clear liquids two days before the surgery (which many have said they followed) and they told me no, just keep following what you're doing. They actually seemed baffled about the clear liquid diet before surgery. Go figure!

CPArnold, congratulations on your positive attitude! I am being sleeved on 9/27, and I can hardly wait. I have an energetic, skinny husband who never understood why I can't just eat less and exercise more. I have convinced him to support me in getting the sleeve, and now he has decided to be my supportive "coach." I am ready for this. I am sick of sleeping with a CPAP, and tired of taking meds for heart failure, BP problems, lipid reduction, cholesterol reduction. I am tired of being tired all the time. It is time to take my life back! I want to be able to travel with my husband and participate in all the activities he now enjoys. So whatever it takes, I am going to do it. I really don't care if I can't eat the way I used to. It is a small price to pay for my health and happiness.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
