I have tried it, I'm not sure how far out you are but I waited until a little after 6 months, I was able to eat two pieces in a sitting, but isn't something I'll have on a regular bases.

It would depend how far you are out. I seen people that are 6 months or more that tried it. Like the poster before, they were only able to eat 3 pieces max. The other half was used for another meal. I also saw that they requested light rice for their rolls.

I love sushi!

If you're concerned about being able to eat the rice, go with sashimi instead. The fish should go down pretty easy as long as you eat slowly and chew well. In fact, if the fish is as fresh as it should be, you can likely get it down fairly easily.

I'm 2yrs out

People at work enjoy sushi and said I should try it

I think I might try to make my own.

I can tolerate rice, fish and some veggies so maybe I might like it.

I didn't try rolls until about 6 months out. I get rice free ones and I substitute seaweed with soy paper. I don't have a problem with seaweed, but I can't just pop the whole roll in my mouth. Taking a bite out of a roll wrapped with seaweed is messy. I find soy paper holds together better. I order a snowcrab and fresh salmon roll this way. Yum!

i always ask for their rice free rolls. most places have 1 or 2. i still can only get 2-3 pieces down, but get kind of uncomfortable. i've only tried it twice.

Thanks Ava

Didn't know you could substitute soy paper for seaweed. Seaweed sticks for me so I haven't been having sushi. Something to look forward to

Sashimi was one of my first solid foods post op. I dont do much for rolls because of the rice. But nutrition wise sashimi is as good as it gets for Protein.

I have sushi a few times a year and I can get down a couple of rolls as long as I pace myself. The problem with sushi is they make some of these rolls so damn big that it's hard to nibble or take small bites without having the entire roll fall apart. It's easier to eat the singles with fish on a ball of rice but the rolls are the fun part of sushi.imo The sliced rolls tend to disintegrate when they're dipped in soy/wasabi sauce but I still love em.

I also break the drinking while eating rules when I have sushi. I keep my whistle and esophagus wet enough to allow the rice to slide through as easily as possible. I consider eating sushi a luxury and it's one of the few times I do eat and drink simultaneously. Have fun!!

A no-go for me. Even this far out, I can't tolerate rice. Every time I try...even just a little bit, I am uncomfortable. Not PB-uncomfortable, but it just stops my meal right then and there.

Tempura, however....now that's another story!

Fresh Salmon sashimi is why God made fish. It's buttery and luxurious and sexy if made with quality fish, and packed with all kinds of Omega 3s and Protein. Great Beginner Level Sashimi, that you can eat with a little soy or fresh lemon juice

Sashimi is my favorite. I'm hoping post op I can still tolerate it because that's the perfect food to me! Also love the miso Soup. Hey, would the miso soup be a good choice for the postop liquid diet?

This is what I am concerned about. I love Sushi and I have a son who makes it often and brings me a plate. My top 5 favorite foods and one of the foods I hope I can still enjoy on occasion. At the very least I hope I can tolerate some fresh raw Fish with soy sauce.

Sashimi is my go to sushi food as well but I don't think I would have or could started there.

I can do some rolls but I have to specify cut small and then put a lot of soy sauce on it. Maybe if you can, start with some cooked sushi rolls if that's your concern. Really be careful and chew well. It's great to go with friends (if you're comfortable with the risk of problems around them), then you can try a few different rolls, types without committing your lunch hour to one thing you may not like.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
