I just called Aetna. They received my paperwork last week and it was entered in their system today. Could take up to 15 days. I hope it's sooner. I'm supposed to start my 10 day liquid diet Monday. I don't want to start it for no reason and then again I don't want to delay things if I am approved. Ugh.

michellew1,

I am SO happy for you! I also have Aetna and have one more weigh-in to go. Following this thread has been extremely stressful for me as my final weigh-in gets closer and closer. A week after the weigh-in, I see the surgeon to make sure everything is done before it's sent to Aetna. After reading your story, I am very much toeing the line diet wise and will until the day of surgery! Good luck to you and hopefully I won't be too far behind you!

This insurance stuff is stressful!

My poor husband. I am stressed already waiting for the news from Aetna. Then add hunger and stress of a strict liquid diet. He might have to hide!

This has been interesting and confusing to read. I know Aetna as different types of policies but I thought all their plans called for a net loss. I made the mistake of losing 10 pounds before my first PCP visit. I have had 5 weigh ins since with all being small losses..which is what I wanted. Unfortunately I am having hip replacement surgery next month before final weigh in. It is highly doubtful I will have any loss due to enormous swelling as well as weight of metal implant. My pcp assured me this could be justified for insurance compliance" . Due to the surgery my initial date will be set back for at least two months so I will end up with a total of 9 weigh ins. Crossing my fingers

It is definitely confusing. According to my plan it just says a net loss. I was just so nervous with all these people who were denied. Aetna is strict but sounds like your doctor office is on top of things! Good luck!

That does suck. I just finished my 6 months in october and all my paperwork is suppose to be submitted this week. When I first started I went to my initial visit with the bariatric clinic and then 1 week later I started my6 months and I had gain 2 pounds from their office to my docs. Since then I have lost 37 pounds so I really hope that they don't deny me. Hang in there and fight this. you can do it

I never heard you had to weigh less at EACH weigh in. I thought it was just first and last. I have Aetna as well and Im hoping thus isnt the case. I gained 1 pound at my 3rd weigh in but lost 9 overall....hmmm. Now im even more nervous

I gained two times during the 3 months. I did have a net loss. I don't know why some people get denied. The paperwork I saw from Aetna said that it was only a net loss. It did make the wait for approval more stressful but I would rather know what I am up against.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
