I'm from E TN....Maryville, about 30 min. southwest of Knoxville. I'm still on the fence about having it done. I think about it all the time. One minute I just know it's the right and best thing for me to do and the next I'm postivie I shouldn't do it. If I do, I will be self-pay and I'm thinking of going to Mexico to Dr. Ortiz. One of my biggest concerns is complications and will my insurance pay for complications from the band. If they don't, I could be financially ruined for life. I know there isn't any way to predict the future, I could have it done and it be the best thing I ever did, or it could be the worst thing I ever did and there is no way to know. Anyway.... just rambling.

Jfran-Where did you have your surgery?

Princess Sophie-It is a tough decision. I decided not to dwell on the negative and only dwell on the positive and that was my deciding factor. Im sure you will make the right decision.

Hi rogers....I'm just outside Memphis is Munford and am using Dr Woodman. I am in the initial stages at this point. My psych evaluation is scheduled for the 6th. How long did it take you to get approval?

My sister used Dr Woodman about three years ago and loved him. She is at her goal and has been for a little over a year....she looks fantastic!

Anyway....HELLLO from Memphis!!

BlueEyedBaby- I had my surgery at Blount Memorial -Dr. Ray with Premier Surgical Weightloss Specialist. LOVED THEM and the surgery center was great.

Princess_Sophie- you ought to attend a support meeting at BM first thursday of every month. People can attest to how great the band is and how great BMWLS has been for them.

Hello everyone!

I am from Knoxville, TN. I am still in the process of getting the Lap Band. If/when I get it, it will be performed at UT Medical Center. There is a new WL program there ran by Dr. Matthew Mancini, Dr. Gregory Mancini, as well as Dr. John D. Scott. The Mancini's are brothers, by the way. It is a brand new team they have put together, including a nutrionist that works with them.

I am excited to start!

Hello I am Robbie and I am from TN. I have talked to my Doctor and she has sent my paperwork to my insurance, she said it shouldn't be a problem to get the Lap Band cause I am 5'1" and weigh 263 lbs. My BMI is 49.7. She said it would take about 6 mths, and that i would have to go to nashville about 4 times before the surgery.

When do they fill the band for the first time, and do you lose weight before they fill it? I am excited and scared too. any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Robbie,

I had my surgery on 7/18 and will have my first fill on 8/28. In the meantime, I have lost 20 lbs. Congratulations on your decision to get banded. Please be advised, though, that you must develop a strict discipline about your eating habits, etc. I had an especially hard time with having to drink only Clear liquids for a while, then only creamed Soups, Jello, etc., and now I'm in pureed foods for a month. That has been especially hard for me. We tried to Celebrate our anniversary last night by going out to eat, but I could only eat Soup while watching my husband eat a big, juicy steak!

You'll have good days and bad days and that's when everybody on this website can help bolster you up again, so don't fail to get on there whenever you have a question or problem.

Keep us updated.

Hey Tennessians! I live in Fayetteville but plan to have my banding done in Birmingham as of right now. I've only been to 2 different seminars and B'ham has my vote right now. Nashville's centinnial seems nice (website & support group) but it's backwards (in direction) from what would be convenient for us. I am at the stage of starting the 6 month diet. Look forward to getting to know alot of fellow banders!

Hi Robbi,

I live in Winchester, TN.

I was banded on 7/18 in Huntsville, AL (closer to me) and went for my first fill yesterday. However, the Dr. could never get the needle to go into the port. He tried twice, probing each time. Not fun! So, now I get to go back to Huntsville early in the morning to the O.P. surgical clinic to have it done under floroscope (sp ?). He said I was only the second patient he had had trouble with like that. The bad thing is that it will cost me a $100 co-pay to have it done at the surgical suite. I can't afford this if I have to get every fill done that way!

Anybody else have this trouble?

By the way, I lost 20 lbs. before my first pre-op visit.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
