@@LainieG sorry, I pressed post instead of responding.

Anyway, it really frustrates me when doctors want their patients to lose so much weight before the surgery. If you were able to do so successfully, you wouldn't NEED the surgery. Just frustrating.

To answer your question, I used to drink one diet Pepsi a day prior to surgery. I had to have a diet Pepsi and a large coffee every day . If any diet asked me to give up these items, I would take a pass on the diet. Ha!

Surprisingly, I have not missed my diet Pepsi. Not once, yet..... But It is still early.

Oh, and I was told no Gatorade. Too much sugar.

I was a "Diet Coke Queen". Stopped at fast food every day to pick up a Supersize one. ( work in sales and on the road everyday. ) Also, I had a Black Tea every morning.

I stopped both for 2 week pre-op diet and never went back. Have to say I'm shocked I don't miss either.

I drink Herbal tea, Water and only a little crystal light now.

It's amazing how our tastebuds and craving change.

I was also a "Carbohydrate Queen" .... That title is also gone ????

You can have G2 instead of Gatorade.

No more Sugar or bubbles, but so well worth it????

Yes the G2 is lower calorie, LainieG I'm so sorry for your weigh in. Shoot my scale is digital and now I know runs 3 pounds from surgeons and most of the Drs I've been to.

When is your surgery again? It's so hard to keep everyone's date, you should really stop the diet sodas now. I had to stop them also and it was hard going from 3-4 a day to none . But I can drink Water and G2 if I'm feeling run down, it does have a pick me up in it. Never was a juice drinker and I've tried the V8 juice it's nasty to me. Right now the shakes which are horrible now since surgery and water are my friends.

Good luck on your soda challenge, keep that head up.

@@#9grammy, thanks for the info. I do like the G2 so that is a plus. I like the fruit juices even in the diet. I've tried cutting back on the soda, not a ot of luck yet but getting a litte easier. I will open one and have a few sips, back in the fridge for another sip later. I can make last 3 - 4 hours, at least before it loses it's carbonation. I need one of those can lids to put on.

I don't have a date as of yet. I do my oral surgery next week and then the psych eval. That will finish everything. I don't know if they can do it before the holidays, I am thinking probably after the first of the year. I am planning a trip to Texas the day after Christmas to see my niece and I kind of hate to miss it but I will wait and see. My concern is if I have it close to then the possibility of having problems.

A better option than G2 is Mio or Dasani. Mio has a few Options that contain B Vitamins and they are all sugar free and no carbs, even the G2 has sugar and carbs. It's tough but the results make it beyond worth it. Good luck on your journey, I am so excited for you! :)

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this particular forum but wanted to introduce myself. I am glad to find people in my age group. I was getting a little nervous seeing so many younger people and not many people around my age. I am scheduled for surgery on November 24th, in Rochester NY. Very nervous and very excited. i guess the nerves are mostly around surgery itself and complications that may arise because of my age and BMI. I am 51 and my BMI is 51 as well! Currently at pretty much the highest weight ever, been overweight my entire adult life with the exceptions when i have lost a lot and then of course, gained it back. Would love to hear from others that have already been through it with a similar BMI and age and just help me understand its all going to be ok!

thanks!

@@mjmboston we met over on the Octobers but welcome to this wonderful supportive group. I had a very high BMI and that along with my age made me very nervous. But with the encouragement of this group and the battery of tests and a quote from Dr. Oz I gained strength. Dr. Oz compared being over 50 with a BMI over 50 as being given a solid Cancer diagnosis. You would take steps to address that and that it is what this surgery is doing....helping to save your life. I was scared, and rightly so,it's major surgery. Surgery was a breeze. Recovery, well Protein Shakes in particular has been the most difficult part. I've had some complications with potassium and Fluid levels which lead to good and bad days. But there's always the positive weight loss! Good luck on your journey!

Welcome mjmboston! 51! Wow, 10 years younger than me (and thanks everyone for letting me stay in this AWESOME GROUP OF WOMEN!!!!) How I wish I would have had this done when I was your age....seriously, you have many many more miles to go and once you get your body and health back I'll bet there will be no stopping you! Life is short and for me and most of the people here, we are making every day count....and it's so much easier as a thin, healthy person!

Very exciting times ahead for all of us!

I am 59 and was sleeved on Oct 9th. Weightloss surgery was a breeze for me. I experienced no pain. The hardest part for me was the 2 weeks of liquid. Today I am completing my 2 weeks of puree foods. I will be so happy tomorrow when I can finally eat! I feel the hardest part is now behind me.

I would appreciate suggestions on what to eat for the next two weeks. I have been getting bored eating the same things every day.

@@mjmboston welcome! We're the same age. I totally understand how you feel. I had my surgery October 17 and have not had one minute of regret, despite the fact that the first week after surgery was incredibly hard for me.

Best of luck to you in this journey. Feel free to ask questions. There aren't a lot of us in this group, but everyone is very encouraging & helpful.

@@Elainecamsun, even though I was sleeved eight days after you, It appears we are at the same stage.

This Saturday I will begin the soft food stage. I have been reading the blog from "the world according to eggface". She has lots of creative recipes. I also googled soft food recipes for bariatric surgery and found a few ideas. Hopefully that helps.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
