Hi all, I'm 2 weeks out and I've had terrible insomnia post-surgery. I've been taking the odd sleeping pill to get to sleep. I'm exhausted but just can't sleep or even nap. Going to the dr today for my 2 week check up and I'll be discussing with him. Just wondering if anyone else has experience this?

I've always had issues with insomnia. Not falling asleep, but staying asleep. My sleep patterns have not changed post surgery. I still have the occasional bout of insomnia where I wake up at 2 am and cannot get back to sleep.

I don't have insomnia, but found I did after surgery for about 2-3 weeks. What I found out is I was waking because I was hungry. If I ate the 3 bites of what ever, I could go back to sleep. I hope this helps a little.

OMG! I have it so bad. I get tired about 9, I make my way to bed, lie there for 30 minutes. Get up CLean the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Try to go back to sleep, usually around 12 or 1. Then wide awake about 4 or 5. AUGH!!!!!

You all are not alone in the insomnia department. I am now 10 wks out and have been awake for what seems like forever. I too see every hour of the day. Just unable to turn my brain off, I replay all of the events from my day, previous conversations etc.. I will see my pcp this wk. This happened before post surgery early on and at that time I was given sleeping pills. I have not been able to sleep with the pills this time. I read that some sleepers don't work well with the sleeve surgery, so we will see. I have always had problems sleeping; even as a child. It's just hard to be wide awake when everyone else is asleep.

For the first 3 weeks post op, i slept about 2 hours a day. I was completely wasted. I thought I was going nuts because no one told me that it was a side effect of the anesthesia and when I said something they all acted like..hmm well that's odd. I was in tears and it seriously affected my recovery.

I ended up getting medication for it, it was a drug used as an antidepressant but the off label use was for a good nights sleep. It was a life saver.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
