So for the past three months (I'm 6 months post op) I have been losing hair like crazy. I was taking a shower and wringed out my hair and a huge wad of hair was pulled out (looked like a mini poodle) lol. I have a lot of hair, very thick and heavy. Now I see some bald/thinning out spots. I take Biotin and use biotin Shampoo. I read that I will eventually go away but I wanted to dye and cut my hair before August. Would it be safe to do it? I don't like losing this much hair. Any suggestions? Thanks.

So scary. I pray this doesn't happen to me. I'll be using Gelatin as well as Biotin. Unlike you, I don't have the hair to spare. Good luck.

You may want to try something like Toppik or Nanogen to cover up those bald & thinning spots if you feel like they are visible to other people. I used those well before surgery just because I had already lost most of my hair (thanks, bad genetics!).

I also have been losing hair like crazy but I still get mine colored and am planning my next Keratin treatment in a month. I started taking Biotin but my facial hair was worse than my husbands so I stopped that.

Crazy side effects but I'll take it with the weight loss results :)

I started shedding at 3 months and it continued into the 6th month - it's slowing down now, but OMG, it's horrifying the amount of hair I lost. Like you, I would look at what I lost in the shower and almost cry. I would look on the bathroom floor after I did my hair and was amazed that there was more hair on the floor!

So here are some things I did...

I went with a shorter cut - It masked the Hair loss for me.

I started using Nioxin Shampoo and scalp therapy - it has a drying affect on my scalp, so I would use a moisturizing shampoo a couple of times a week as well.

With my doctor's OK, I started taking Biotin and Folic Acid.

I purchased Toppik - it works just like the videos on line show. It seems expensive, but I am still using the small bottle I originally purchased.

I believe that the steps above are not going to help anyone with the shedding or losing of hair, it's going to help with the new growth. I can see new growth and lots of it. I'm not losing as much every day as I was, so things are getting better.

My doc said, "Whatever you lose due to the surgery, will grow back." I can see that.

Best of luck to you!

I was blessed with A LOT of hair. I started to loose hair like crazy but only I could tell because of the freakishly crazy amount of hair I have. (part ape I think LOL) but I started with B12 injections then started with Biotin. I take that every other day, not super religious on it because it causes me to have really bad breakouts but helps with the regrowth of my hair. I just recently had a trim, got it thinned out because the new growth made it super thick again. And only took 1/2 inch off. Which felt better, I usually have short hair through the summer but I am going through this transition and want to have long hair for a while. I also use a Shampoo that helps with breakage and Hair loss which helps a lot as well. Its all normal to loose hair with this surgery because you put your body in such a shock. Your hair will come back, it takes some time. Good luck!

I have started having these issues so I picked up Biotin to try today, hoping that will help some. I have always shedded a lot though so its not to bad but I figure I want to do something before it is.

I have thick hair too. I colored my hair also during my fall out stage between 5 and 8 months. did fine. My years ( in the past) as a hair dresser, I learned that coloring the hair helps keep it conditioned believe it or not! Now bleaching no... that is harsh but good old color like over the counter is fine. I am 12 months out this July and all falling out has stopped and healthy as ever!

Really praying I do not experience this since my hair is fine, thin, and short to begin with! And I don't think I can rock the G.I. Jane look very well.

I'll be 4 months post op on the 13th. I have very, very thick hair. Or had. It started just before 3rd month. It's severe but mostly only me notices. I've been taking Bioten since 2 months preop. I've been using Biotin Shampoo all along. None of that helped. It's also drier, frizz ire and breaks easier. I added Fish Oil about 3 weeks ago. Just had my labs done and everything was good except B12 and ferretin. It's coming out in big handfuls when wet and sheds all day. I was flat out depressed for about a week. But I've just accepted it. With the rate of growth on my face, legs, underarms and "down there", there ain't no way it's not gonna grow on my head eventually!!!! My NP said the average loss starts at 3 months and ends about 9 or 10 months. The growth cycle for hair is 90 days. I did read that anemia makes it worse? So even though my Iron was ok, my other labs that are low contribute to anemia, so maybe, getting a handle on that might help me??? I don't know. 78 pounds gone is worth it. I have 80 to go. I just pray it comes back. Glad to hear that some have had improvement.

I had bypass and am losing some hair as well. I didn't want to color my hair because I noticed it was also becoming more brittle. So my hairdresser puts a glaze in it. No chemicals. But my hair is dark brown. So we change the hue a little to like honey are red. If that makes sense. My plan B is my wig which I love...

I've lost a great deal of hair is well. It really scared the heck out of me. It came even more to life after I went in and had a stylist do something to my hair and she talked me into coloring it – actually… Just highlights but it's something I never did. I warned her about the fact that I had bariatric surgery a few months prior and she told me it was fine my hair was in good condition – let's just say I started crying when she took the foils out – my hair was falling out in clumps… It was on my birthday on top of it. I friended talked me into trying to do something nice for myself and I regretted it – months later I still do. I've had to cut it a couple of times just to try to get the old stuff off but, my hairs not really growing. It has thinned out considerably and is continuing to do so. Honestly don't know what to do to get it back now. It was one of the few things that I liked about myself and now my hair just looks really crappy and brittle. It still falls out every time I wash it and I've tried to back off on Washing it – going many days and even using the dry shampoos... It doesn't help that my Vitamin levels are way off. Not sure what to do.

How far out from surgery are you? I feel for you. It's definitely the one trade off that has been hardest. I need a dry Shampoo. Anyone have recommendations? I am trying to go to an every other day wash but my scalp is oily. I just find I lose twice as much when I wash every other day but at least that might help the brittleness. Fun stuff, ladies. :(

Almost a year- September 13th... I honestly just use an inexpensive dry shampoo... It's suave.. I used a more expensive one - bed head, but it didn't last very long and it didn't work as well...

I wish you luck :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
